Age 66

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
Gary Fisher Sugar 1 MTB
K2 Road Bike
ilovebent Tadpole Trike

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Almost enough that I almost can skip meals.
Glocosimine and vitamin I, (ibuprofen) plus-

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
I think I can still ride fast, I think everyone else just rides faster than they used to.

This time around about 8 yrs.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
Started back commuting then into MTB riding, then MTB racing, now only occasionally MTB riding. Mostly road riding now.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Last year only about 1500 miles total. The year before right at 3200 miles.
Hurt a knee and it cost me almost 6 mos riding.

What's up with the recumbent hatred?

I just thought I needed to answer RonH, regarding his dissing of recumbents. I road a Trek roadie beginning in 2001 and put several thousand miles a year on it, up and down hills and mountains. It was the best bicycle I had ever owned. I did notice, however, that I had lower back pain that became very uncomfortable on longer rides, and my neck got tired of bending back to look ahead. I rode mostly on the hoods or on top, and seldom in the drops. In July of 2006 I gave the Trek to my son and bought a long wheelbase recumbent, and now have close to 1000 miles on it. It's comfortable, fast, although heavier than the Trek, but I get a lot more "cool bike" comments and turned heads. My goal this year is 4000 miles of riding, mostly between March and November. The steel framed recumbent absorbs bumps better, I see ahead better, I can stay on the seat at a full stop, and have cool chopper handlebars and motorcycle mirrors. I climb and cruise as fast as I did on the Trek. And, no more back pain. So, regarding recumbents, don't knock it until you've tried it. I'm not switching back.

Sort of. It seemed so many folks ignored it the first time through, that I put it at the end also. It is deliberate!

Please tell us your age.

I will be 54 this Friday.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

I have a Cannondale T800 Touring bike that I bought a few weeks ago. I also have a couple of hybrids. A Marin that I really like and a Novara (REI).

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Nothing at all, but am thinking of starting.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

Have always been active. I am sure I have slowed down a bit. I can pretty much do the same things I used to do, it just sometimes takes me a wee bit longer.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

All my life, but more serious now. I used to run, and just bike for something else to do. Now I just bike.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race?

I commute in the summer. I travel extensivley because of my job, but actually drive everywhere so I take a bike with me and ride in the evenings. Hotels are sometimes dictated by their proximity to a bike path! One tour every summer of about 800 miles or so. This year I have the entire month of September off as a sabatical of sorts so I am planning something special.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

Nearly every day in the summer. Couldn't even begin to estimate the mileage.

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.?

I have an elliptical, bowflex, total gym and a bike on a trainer that I use in the winter. Nothing special.

Ah. I thought it was to catch anyone who might not have been quite truthful when they answered the first time. Sadly, some women I know are ashamed of their ages & prefer to shave a few years off when asked.

Age? 51 in June

Bike? Specialized Expedition Sport modified for touring- flat bar, Brooks, Aero Bars, 1.5 Nimbus Armadillos

Vitamins? One a day for men

Slowed Down? I'm in better shape now than when I was 30. Don't recover as fast, and I'm finding a few things ache that I didn't know I had...

How Long/What type? Started in 2004 with campgound rides with the kids. Found myself wanting longer and faster. Was soon doing 15 a day, with 30's on the weekends. Progressed to 30s 3-4l times a week after work, and 60+ on the weekends. Got a handful of centuries under the belt, and ride the Gateway MS150 (Columbia, Mo.) each year. Tend to average 15 mph. Have recently discovered hills are my friend. Would love to do a cross country- similar to Northern Tier to Illinois, south to St. Louis, then west on Trans Am.

How often? Not much in winter, maybe 1 or 2 a month. Spring/Summer/Fall- 3-4 a week/5 a week/3-4 a week. Averaging 2000 a year now.

Other exercise? Spinning (3 a week), jogging indoors (2 a week), and weight machines in winter. Hiking in warmer months.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

Felt 70, Raleigh Mtn Bike, Navarro Safari Touring

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Spent $$$$$ on all kinds of supplements...........nothing really did anything. I eat right and exercise

Other than 2 very bad knees, I hold my own. 2 steps slower, a full inch shorter and God forbid if I get hurt, recovery time is far too long!

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
Got serious in the early 70's, left it for career and have been back strong the past 5 years

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race?
30 - 60 miles, 4 - 5 times a week in the summer with at least 1 ride approaching 70 - 100 each week. Working towards touring 4- 6 weeks next summer

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
I try to bike 6 days a week, indoors/out............annual mileage 4 - 5 K

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.?

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
Graco road bike (no, I don't know what it is either)

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Never have.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
Just starting again. A ten year old kid raced me today...on foot!

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
I'm a car guy. I love cars and driving, racing, and building them. So even though I did a lot of bike miles as a teen, that all stopped at 16. My current bike was purchased used from a classified ad sometime in the mid-80s, to be used as racetrack transportation. It served me well at that, but it didn't amount to many miles.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race?
Currently commuting, but it's only a mile. I'll be getting my miles on the KATY Trail (Missouri's rail to ride just across the river) until I can go fast/long enough to hit the roads around here.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.?
No organized activities, but I used to get a lot of exercise at work. That is the major reason for taking up the bike...a career change will keep me tied to one room, and I don't want to get "old"

New Biker

Some questions:

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

I have just started riding to work in an attempt to get fit and lose weight. I started with a hybrid/mountain bike I have had and barely used for about three years. Gosh it was hard to start with. There is a steep hill at the beginning nof my route and the same on the way back. Initially I could only get about 20 yds up the hill but I am now managing it without stopping!! Today as a reward to myself I took delivery of a KONA PhD and it is amazing!

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

No

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

A lot!! I used to be very fit playing rugby squash and I sailed. Now overweight and slow!!

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

As above

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

Commuting to work about 5 miles each way

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

4 days week

Perhaps you might indicate your age on your reply??

I will be 51 in May

I ride a Mongoose Cipressa Titanium - ya I know Mongoose and Road bike don't go together but when I bought this in 2000 it was a great deal and I am thrilled with the Ti ride. Good components as well!

I don;t take any supplements - will take the occasional Aleve when I have aches.

I am sure I have slowed down but don;t really keep track. I just go out and enjoy the moment. My only benchmark comparison is that I used to run the 10K at around 43-45 minutes and now I am in the mid 50's.

I have bicycled all my life but never raced or road seriously. As a kid and teenager, road to get wherever I need to go.

I am mostly a weekend rider - i fly/ travel all week so biking is not possible - during those times i go to the gym. On weekends will do 1-2 rides at 20-50mi each. Have no idea how much i do in a year. In Oct did a tour with my wife thru Sonoma road each day about 40mi. Loved it (the wine wasn;t bad either).

I try and stick to a pretty strict regime. Alternate cardio (bike, run, elliptical) with weight training - one day upper, one day lower; plyometrics and core strengthening. One day a week i'll do intervals. trying to incorporate yoga and stretching but there is only so much time - hopefully i will get to it.

52 going on 29

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
2005 Giant AC w/ few upgrades, and an old junk hardtail for getting around the campgrounds.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Not yet. Might take a multi on the morning of a race.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
None yet. Have always been slow uphill however still give those young punks a run for their money downhill.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
Rode as a kid, quit at age 17. Started biking again in 1995 and got hooked on singletrack in 1998.
Bike-a-holic now!

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race?
Aggressive XC / All Mountain in the hills of WV. Even did a few XC races last year. Hope to do more this year. Shortest weekday evening ride, about 5 - 6 miles. Usual weekend rides anywhere from 10 to 20.
Did a 32 mile loop last year with a bunch of young guys, 3/4 of it was rocky/rooty singletrack in WV
and was still able to do a 13 mile nasty singletrack ride the next day. Took a couple days to recoupe from
that one.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Mostly weekends (due to work) however, good weather with the time change I'm getting back into the
after work rides through the week not to mention our vacations are mountain bike related (always).

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.?
If not mountain biking, I like to go hiking, trailwork, etc.

Please tell us your age. 50

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

early 90's Trek 720 hybrid (commuter)
2005 Specialized Sequoia Comp road bike
2006 Kona Cinder Cone mountain bike
2007 Rivendell Glorius mixte (new commuter, should be shipped this week)

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

calcium, vegetarian multi, B complex, iron, lutein to ward off macular degeneration

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

I've been completely unathletic my whole life, so I don't notice that I've slowed down at all. I do notice that I can't keep up with younger folks, probably due to a combination of age and excess weight, and I'm more timid on mountain bike rides than they are.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

I rode as a kid of course, but not again regularly until my neighbor got me into it in 2005.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides, commute, tour, race?

14 mile RT commute
20-40 mile rides on weekends during spring/summer/fall
occasional metric centuries
week-long ride across Nebraska last summer
hope to do a century this year
occasional mountain bike rides
Don't care a whit about speed.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

commute 4-5 times/week (averaged 2x/week during February due to weather)
usually ride once on weekends during nice weather
rode about 3500 miles last year; shooting for 4000 this year

7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.?

occasional weight lifting, occasional yoga/stretching DVDs, walk the dogs, "running" and swimming a few months before sprint triathlon (did first one last August)
