Remember too that frequency is important.
There are 26 weeks between May 1 and November 1. To reach 1,000 miles in that time, it's a average of 38½ miles a week. If you ride only once a week, that's 38½ miles every ride. Twice a week, that's still nearly 20 miles a ride. But, if you ride five days a week, that's only 7¾ miles per ride.

let's stick together, then.
I did 27 miles in 3 nights here simply riding in the housing tracks.
I'll keep this thread alive and we'll egg each other on...

I used to find it difficult to just ride for the sake of racking up miles.
Here are a couple of places I've ridden and been suprised by my total miles at days end:
*Hamlin Beach State Park....pack a picnic lunch, take your bikes along and make a day of it. A complete circuit of the park including all the camping loops is seven miles. You'll be so busy people watching that the miles will just fly by.
*Holy Sepulchre Cemetery is dead flat (excuse the pun) between Dewey and Lake. It's teaming with wildlife and beautiful sculptures. If you want a little challange you can cross Lake Ave. and ride down to the cemetery's three ponds. After you're stronger you can pick up the Charlotte section of the Genesee River Trail right at the north edge of the cemetery. From the trailhead at Lake Ave to the north end of the trail at Pelican's Nest is three miles.
Every inch of these locations I've listed is either blacktop or concrete riding surface.

I love riding cemeteries. I will always take a little time to walk up and down a few of the older rows, looking at the markers and trying to imagine the lives represented by the graves. I always come back with a stronger appreciation for my own life.
I also have a thing for state capitol buildings, major college campuses, lower downtown sections (usually on a Sunday), airports (I'm also a pilot and am drawn to general aviation airports) and historical places - all on my bike. My titanium mountain bike and I have been to some really interesting places together.

TSI,
thanks for the tip. I've used BikeJournal a few days now and it will probably be a nice chronicle for the year. Put in 10 miles tonite after being off since Friday.
BTW, read in City newspaper there will be a "Blessing of the Bikes" Saturday at 12:30pm at St. Monica's.
Father Ray will make it fun…I'm going to try to make it.

I think my bike came blessed. I had one occasion when I felt my guardian angel grab my handlebars and saved me from crashing into some huge, jagged rocks.

I just started rideing 3 weeks ago and have logged in 92 miles so far. I can see rideing 150 to 200 miles a month as a doable goal. We have 5 months til November. 200 miles a month will get one to 1000.
The "pie ride" sounds great! I'm currently scouting out a route to a cafe or bakery that serves the delicious delicassy!

Good luck with the cycling. Your body will get stronger quickly, just don't overdo to much at first. Injuries will be a setback. All of us had to start out just as you did. Welcome to the forum.

Ah! At the intersection of Paul Rd and Scottsville Rd there's a restaurant--the Jetview or something like that. In the back corner of their parking lot is where the paved portion of the Genesee Valley Greenway begins. It's near to you and a good, safe place to leave the car. You can take that right into Genesee Valley Park and go either way on the Canalway, or straight ahead on the Riverway to downtown.
I've seen lots of deer in that section. It's quiet and scenic and you wouldn't know you're a few hundred yards from the airport.

You ride right through the brewery (background) to get to a ped/bike bridge over the river (foreground).

Wife and I did 26 miles in the last 24 hrs….127 miles for the month of May so far.
And we'll still end May 75 miles off the pace to make 1000 miles by Nov.1.
Still gonna try, but we're out 4 nights next week.
I've already learned that to make my goal I need to average an hour a night on the bike and how hard that is. Sounded very doable in April, but some nights I just don't have that hour.
Maybe people are more busy than we think...

Great - the best time of day to ride, especially in summer. I have been leaving for rides at 6 to 6:30 am the past week. Even in winter, I have lights on two of my bikes, and enjoy riding the trails in the dark. I also folllow most of my rides with a swim - during summer in the outdoor rec pool, and in the winter, the indoor rec pool. Both are near my home.

It's June 29, and I'm at 348 miles tonite; my goal is 1000 miles by nov. 1.
Certainly doable, but I have to have a 300 mile month of July.
I didn't realize how much time and commitment this would take.
But my doctor is happy with my "numbers"; gotta keep going.
Already I can feel the difference...

Back for the 30 day maintenance check
After riding 39 miles yesterday, I took our bikes back for the 30 day check-up. There were a few adjustments needed to both derailleurs, etc.
BTW, we rode on a new to us section of the Erie Canal yesterday that featured about 9 miles of "crushed stone and gravel".
The bikes looked like sugar-coated donuts when we were done!
Don't know if we'll be riding that portion of the canal anymore.
And it was in the most affluent parts of town...

The paved section of the Canalway from Long Pond Road in Greece to Schoen Place in Pittsford is the longest paved section in its entire length. In fact, except for a couple of hundred-foot sections under bridges, it's the westernmost paved section.
For a real treat, hang out along the canal on Tuesday (July 11) as the 2011 Cycling the Erie Canal Tour comes through town. Hundreds of riders pass through on their way to the overnight at Nazareth College. Tuesday and Wednesday are the two days in summer when I avoid the Canalway on my commute. Too much traffic!
