Casual Shoes
I'm looking for a pair of casual biking shoes. Shoes that are not clipped in and not Mountain biking shoes. They should have a firm sole that doesn't slip off the pedals and without laces that might get caught in the chainring or gear mechanism. Any suggestions?

Superfeet insoles or similar, that offer a 3/4 arch support stiffener, turn a regular shoe
into a cycling friendly stiffened shoe..
big platform pedals also help .. Ergon my new Favorite..
I wear shoes that I can stand on the concrete floor and work in for 8 hours..
there are touring shoes for Spud pedals with rubber soles,
no one forces you to fit the SPD cleat.
they come with the pedals anyhow..
into a cycling friendly stiffened shoe..

Plenty of MTB shoes that look casual but the only ones I can think of have laces exposed. Never used to be a problem when I used them as I always tucked the laces in.

My day to day shoes are Birkenstock clogs. This Saturday I drove to a park to begin a ride, and noticed I forgot my cycling shoes. My pedals are M324 (one side SPD, the other side flat) so I just wore my Birkenstocks.
They worked just fine, believe it or not. I think any shoe that has a very stiff sole and a good footbed can do OK as cycling shoes.

Indoor soccer shoes work pretty well. Some have a flap that covers the laces to prevent getting caught in the chain.

I have two bikes with pedals that are spd one side and platform the other. One is the TCR that is loaned out to casual riders and is my Long ride bike. I change the pedals to SPD's only when I ride it as I do not like not being clipped in. The other is the beater and is the bike I just jump on for local trips. Platform on one side and any shoe will do- including Crocs. Only thing I notice is that the firmer the sole of the shoe on this bike- The less foot pain I get.
For cycling you do need a firm sole and nothing better than a specific cycling shoe to get the right amount of firmness.

I too dislike clipless in an urban environment and I carry my clipless shoes in a backpack until I'm clear of all the crazies that cut you off. Sometimes I don't want to carry this backpack which is why I'm looking for some casual shoes. I have a good pair of mountain biking shoes but I find that they are difficult to position on the platform side of my pedals. They are made to install clips but I use them without. A flat bottom casual shoe with a firm sole is what I'm looking for and one without laces would be preferred.

Have seen a shoe by Exustar. I have no experience with them, but I really like the look. Why can't anyone resurrect the old Bata shoes? My very old pair is about to give up the ghost, and will be sorely missed when they are gone.
