OK, I removed the seatpost and greased it thoroughly, replaced it and tightened it snugly. Also tightened the drive side pedal although it didn't move much if at all. Also degreased and re-lubed the front and rear deraileur, pulleys and chain. Did a 22 mile ride on Saturday and THE NOISE WAS GONE. Ran it through both front rings and several gears with no noise. Not sure if it was the seatpost and still don't understand how that could affect was seemed to be a clicking in the drive side pedal. It will take a few more rides to convince me that the problem is truly solved but for now it appears to be. Thanks to all for the input and advice on what might have been the cuse and cure.

If you moved the pedals with the crank set, it could still be the pedals. I have had a mysterious creaking/clicking periodically on multiple bikes, and each time I removed the pedals, cleaned the threads on the pedals and crank arms, relubed with lithium grease, reinstalled pedals - and noise gone! If the pedal threads "dry out," or pick up grit, or get wet and dry out sporadically they click. Maybe I've just been lucky on the dx.

Had a crank set that creaked on my son-in-laws bike. It was a Truvatif Elita and I have them on two of my bikes with no problems. Changed the creaking one over to my spare Elita complete with bottom bracket and problem cured. What I also did was put the creaking crank set onto one of my bikes and no problem at all. Just the crank set and not the B.B.
6 months later and the son-in-laws bike started creaking again so checked it out properly. No play anywhere- BB in tight- crank bolt done up really tight and I could not get a noise when I was riding it. Son-in-law did though. His legs are far stronger than mine and he carries a lot more weight. Some how that combination of strong heavy rider and the Truvatif BB and a "Slightly" worn crank set creaks.
Made him buy a 105 Compact with BB on offer and no problems.

The next step is to take off the bad crank set and bottom bracket, then apply a thin coat of grease to all of the threads and 'interfaces.' Anywhere where there's metal-on-metal should be greased.

The mysterious noice problem. I have had a few of those. I remember once I had one. Often I have gotten them and it was a matter of cleaning, lubing and tighting the bolts on the chain rings. Some times it can be two spokes rubbing together (but with the new wheels, I don't think so). One time I had it and did everything I could think of and it drove me nuts! It turned out to be a hairline crack in the water bottle cage which only creaked on the power stroke on one side! Good luck.
