What flu quarantine?

Good question, and I wondered myself, also. My only clue is the email I got cancelling our performance because the retirement community was under a "flu quarantine" . and I have no clue what that means or how you do one.

"Sorry, to let you know this, but we MUST cancel your performance at Lincoln Meadows tomorrow.

We have been quarantined for a flu virus here"

I had not checked out this thread for awhile, and it's a shame. There is some funny stuff here.

My flu shots are mandated. My body is public domain and all that. Sore arm for a day or two.

I've not got the shingles vaccine. I need to. If I get shingles, I'm out of commission at least until the sores scab over. It's on my list of things to do.

During the Avian flu scare it seems there were some flu quarantines. Serious stuff. We ain't as young as we used to be.

Thanks for the correction Jan, I was not sure about what the exact wording is/was. Here the shots are $250.00 at almost every place you can get them. Monica and I are getting the shot anyway, with all of my health problems I don't need anything else.

My grandfather and father didn't have long, healthy lives, both died young. I'll hedge my bets and not have anymore "fun" than I have already had. Glad it is working for others, it is strictly a personal decision as it should be.

I generally always get a flu shot and never have any effects.
I also believe in building up natural immunity wherever possible, e.g. be in company of other with flu, drink from public water fountain.

I got a script from my doctor and checked with my insurance company and they said they would cover it! They even sent me the claim forms to send in... She said I may have to pick up the medicine and take it to one of their in-plan urgent care places -- but if I did that they would pay for both the medication as well as the injection itself.

I had shingles when I was in my 20's and found that they were VERY painful. I don't want to try it again. Actually, I had read that if you've already had shingles you don't need the vaccine -- but I think I'll play it safe. Actually they don't really know enough about it yet. There is apparently a debate over whether you only need to get it once or every 5 years...

The pharmacy checked on coverage on the shingles vaccination by my health insurance carrier. It isn't covered as I am 56 and Monica is 55 so we will gladly pay the cost ourselves. Much cheaper and less painful than having shingles.

I strongly believe this to be incorrect. I had Shingles about 30 years ago, and it was strongly recommended that I et the vaccine. You can get Shingles again and again. In some cases, it reflects a lowering of the immune system.

Yep, it can come back to bite you multiple times.

Taking the vaccine from a pharmacy to somewhere else for injection can be problematic because it must be given within not too many minutes (30?) after removal from freezer.
Pharmacists can give the vaccine. At least, in Indiana they can do that. Mine was injected by a pharmacist.

I keep meaning to get the shingles vaccination - my wife had it at about 35, on her head and face, and was miserable for about 6 months. Just been lazy, I suppose. Need to do that with my next Dr. visit.

Just checked my Explanation of Benefits for the last Doc visit where I also got a Shingles immunization and TDap booster and the company paid for all the injections(with their adjustments of course). So, for me at least, Anthem BC/BS of VA paid for the Shingles injection and I'm 54.

I was told today that there is an extremely virulent and dangerous 36 hour flu causing vomiting, etc., in the area and likely at the Lincoln Meadows Retirement Home - a large, luxury retirement community about 3 miles away. Those folks (old folks) would likely be more susceptible to the flu and possibly more severe consequences. Oops!! I guess I am an "old folk" as many of them are younger then I am.

Not flu (influenza) at all. Sounds like a gastrointestinal illness probably caused by a virus. Flu is a respiratory illness.

OK - but I was told flu. I correct that to a possible GI virus. Pretty much 3rd hand info right now.

One of the reasons that the public doesn't give influenza the respect that it deserves is that many lesser illnesses have been described as being 'flu'.
I don't doubt that the GI illness at the retirement home may have been deserving of a limited quarantine.

I would hate to be the one giving flu a bad name!

Reads like the kitchen may have messed up and gave their residents "stomach flu", i.e. food poisoning. Never, never want to admit that!
