My neighbor bought a trick bike today. The first thing he did was load up the family and go joy riding...

Look at those faces. That's what its about.

Apparently, some bike riders were ignoring the signs and riding through the construction zone. Imagine that!

Not sure what we’re looking at other than my Gianni Motta in front of someone’s idea of roadside art.

From today’s ride in the Brushy Mountains in NC
There is supposed to to be a trace of purple wisteria in the photo below
Found this beside the mountain road I was riding. For some reason it made me think of the movie “Deliverance”. I didn’t hang around too long.

Perfect day for 6000’ of hills!

Introduced my new disc brake bike and relatively new hip to some steep hills. 6000’ of climbing over 40 miles with a lot of 10%++ grades.

There’s a natural spring in there if you’re brave enough to open the door!

Spring at 2500’ in NC!

Nice stream just before a 15% Hill.

The smile you get when that 16% grade is in your rear view mirror.

[QUOTE=big john;20901075]
The crank on this bike is a mid compact or 52/36 Ultegra 11sp chainring. I had been using a 50/34 with an 11-32 cassette on my other climbing bike. To get the equivalent gear ratios with my older bike I put an 11-34 Shimano HG800 11sp cassette on the new one. I REALLY like the new gear combinations. It gives an even wider range of gears. With an 50-11 I was spinning out (for me) at around 32-34 mph on long 6% descents. Now I can go a tad faster with the 52-11.
Here are the cogs for the 11-34 cassette:
11-13-15-17-19-21-23-25-27-30-34T
On the hills in the photos, for training and to increase power I typically try and ride in the 36-30 and let my cadence drop to around 55. I’ll admit that since this was my first ride on the steeper stuff since the hip replacement I used the 36-34 a time or two. I’d definitely be in the granny gear if it were a longer ride.
The bike rode GREAT. It’s stiffer.....but not jarring stiff where every bump jars your bones and joints. With it being stiffer it’s super solid which you really notice and enjoy on descents. I have new lightweight carbon disc wheels that only weigh 1320 grams on it. The rims are a little wider which provides a great footprint for a more narrow road tire. With a 25 mm tire, hydraulic disc brakes and the stiffer frame it descends like a dream. While I’ve always had different bikes for different needs I could easily get rid of the others and just use this one for all my riding (except TTs). The disc brakes are definitely a keeper. Now if I could only get another pound or so off the bike weight......
Way more than you asked for but I got on a roll........

Good stuff, thanks. I'd never thought about those "mid compact" cranks before. Been using a 34x29 low gear but with a 10 speed cassette. That gearing you have would work for me if I ever decided to get a new road bike.

Today I did a good old fashioned group ride through the Georgia countryside.
Weather was spectacular. Scenery sublime. Great company. Everyone shared the work and we beat each other up pretty good on the hills.
