New shoes and pedals

I just bought new pedals, Speedplay from my LBS. However they did not have any shoes in my size. I bought new shoes on line. Is there a way to take measurements of the cleat on my currant shoes to determine the location of the new cleat on the new shoe? I feel weird taking the bike in to the LBS to have them fit since I didn't purchase the shoes from them. Thanks for any advise.

You could potentially do that. A good starting point is simply finding the ball of your foot and facing the cleat in a neutral position. A ride or so will let you know if its off.

My experiences with bike shops are nothing but positive when it comes to services. They want/need business and shouldn't push you away. I see it as an opportunity to build a relationship and meet some people so don't feel silly about going in if need be.

Good advice NoShiftSherlock, thanks for the response. I give the LBS as much business as I can.
