choice of bike for IGH rear hub?
New to the folding bike forum, In the past I have bought my daughter a schwinn hinge. Now I'm looking at a couple of low end bikes to convert to internal gear hubs. One is the Citizen Miami because of the 36 spoke rims. the other is a Hasa F3 HASA BIKE
but it has the 28 spoke rims and it seems that there is no 28 hole IGH sold in the US. Doe's anyone know of a dealer that sell s one? thanks Joe

If you're going so far as to buy a new hub and probably spokes, why not spring for a rim while you're at it?
But if that's a financial deal-breaker -- and depending on the hub you have now, you may not even need new spokes due to matching spoke hole diameters or using a different cross pattern -- you could fudge the build by skipping two holes on each side of the hub. Never built a wheel this way, but if I were to try, I would skip the 12 o'clock and 6 position holes on one side, the 9 and 3 on the other. My Birdy had this going on with, I think, the front wheel, from the factory.

Ok let me have a stab at this
First ..what IGH you are looking for .....? I have one speed coaster wheels which are really affordable ( or two speed automatix which are affordable but not cheap ) In general add more speeds and the price goes up .... all the way to over a thousand dollar ..lol
Now.. next step to need to measure the OLD Over Locknut Dimension .... that's the clearance between the frame where the wheel goes
than u need dropouts with a slot verus the ones which have a hole slightly bigger than the axle
or you can use a chain tensioner as well ... ( but why ... if you want an IGH )
lots of questions to answer
before you should get all exited about trying to achieve a 400 dlr IGH bike which competes with 700 dlr versions
:-)

Honestly, I'd get one of the Downtube $600-$700 IGH bikes, either the 16" or 20" wheeled version. With the belt drive which comes standard on either of them, you would not be able to build yourself a similar bike for less. I get bike shop discounts on parts. I know how to build my own wheels. And I would still go with a stock Downtube before I tried putting something together on my own, as proposed in the original post.

The Spoke holes are in the Hub-shell, the Core in various axle widths is an interchangeable Part ,
.. if you take on the Expense and Bother to DIY or , have a shop exchange those parts ..

Looks I ks like the Citizen Miami is out because of the dropouts, thanks I missed them. Wanted to try a Sram Automatix for fun. I probably have a SA+AW 28 in my collection of hubs. my revised choices are the Hasa F3 and the Dahon Boardwalk.

The fact that there are three models with varying prices but similar looking frames implies that there are various levels of components on each.
All are cheaper than the Dahon City Vybe so I would have to assume that all the components on those bikes are also cheaper.
If so, that may not be great, as the Vybe is not the smoothest or most accurate shifting bike you will ride and isn't even close to the high end Dahon models.

It should be a basic upgradeable set of bikes. The fact they're Ford branded just might be the reason they carry a low price. Besides, once I get it, I'll check the serial number and see if it's a legit Dahon product. If not, I'll contact Amazon and send it back. Amazon DESPISES counterfeit merchandise.

I went with the Hasa F3 I'm at the upper weight limits for folders. Also amazon is out of stock on the fords, I haven't had good experiences in the past dealing with third party sellers on Amazon

As for weight limit, I'm 225lbs, so I'm on the heavy side as well. Hasa recommends a person weigh "under" 240lbs, and a Dahon is rated for 230lbs. Sounds pretty similar to me.
But, it's all about what's best for you that matters. Enjoy!

Heh,...I got you. I have my Xootr Swift wheelset, and I can always upgrade the shifters and such. All good for us both I guess.
