A variation on a pedal

Does anyone see any advantages of using the kind of pedaling system that is used in this bike? I know it probably adds a couple of pounds to the bike, but as I looked at the pictures and thought through the pedaling motion, it almost seems like it would be a little easier on the joints because there is no rotation involved in pedaling, only pushing.
