The direction of the outer flange spokes is placed in the pattern in the opposite way from the initial set of drive spokes. Visually you can see the cross pattern starting to emerge.

The spokes are dropped into the hub from the inside of the flange so that they will be laced from the outside of the wheel. In my experience this working from the outside makes the lacing a bit easier.

Just to show that I am not aware of the need for getting spokes for the build I have just dropped a bundle of cash for this discussion. These are the spokes I will use for my wheels as I build them for this thread. Yes I jumped ahead in the sequence, but I wanted to be sure the demonstration pictures were going to be correct.

Spokes by the box from 365 cycles. Cost works out to about 60 cents per spoke so a big deal!
