Abus U lock issue

I've mounted an Abus Granit X-Plus 540 on the frame of a Cube SL Road Pro.

It's a sturdy lock and mount but the lock rattles where the shackle slots in to the crossbar of the lock.

There doesn't seem to be a fix for this.

Is this normal? Has anyone had the same problem?

I can only find glowing reviews online and no mention of this issue.

Thanks in advance.

Ask Abus if it's okay to wrap some rubber tape or add some plasti-dip coating to the shackle to dampen the noise.

They'll probably say any modifications void whatever warranty there might be. But I don't see how adding a bit of what's already on the shackle would hurt anything.

Or carry some rubber band mounts, the type used on many bike lights, and strap 'em around the junctions between the shackle and crossbar while you're riding. Should help dampen any vibration.

+1 with canklecat, except for the asking Abus about it. Just do something to quiet the noise.

To clarify, it's where the ends of the shackle (pins) lock in to the crossbar sockets where it's rattling.

Bikes: Many, and the list changes frequently

Got the same lock. Can't recall hearing a rattle whilst riding (using the Abus mount)

What carrying system are you using?

Is it the EaZy KF or the USH 540?

The USH 540 mount.

It's the locking mechanism which rattles rather than the mount.

I had that mounting system at first and I really hated it.

After switching to the Eazy KF system, I have been much happier and I didn't have your problem to begin with.

My advice is to change over to the EazyKF, besides fixing your issue, it is just a much better system to use.

Where can this be sourced? Amazon only have one part of it

Edit: Have found it on Evans cycles but the reviews are quite poor about it breaking, rattling and chipping the frame paint

For whatever reason, it has been hard to find both parts at the one site.

On first glance, I did find them together at this site :

https://www.xxcycle.com/abus-u-lock-...f-ring,,en.php
https://www.xxcycle.com/abus-u-lock-...-45342,,en.php

But the pricing seems annoyingly high.

Okay I just checked Evans Cycles and they do now have both parts(which they didn't a few weeks ago when I checked)

https://www.evanscycles.com/en-au/ab...acket-00104635
https://www.evanscycles.com/en-au/ab...xplus-00104637

Much better pricing, I would get this straight away before one of the items goes out of stock again.

I read the comment about the bracket chipping paint off the frame, to avoid this, do as I have done and cut out a bit of old tube and place it between your frame and the bracket.

This worked a treat for me, and I had to take the bracket off recently after having it on for a year, and there was no marking to the frame, no doubt due to the use of the bit of old tube.

Bought this but can't get it to work. The mounting part on the bike is on but can't get the little part go into the u-lock. Of course, I removed the two screws before trying to put it in - any video or trick to get it in?

See pic

Thx

If my memory serves me right, I think I moved back/slided back, the plastic/rubber covering on the U-Lock, so that enough of the shackle was exposed, before fitting that mounting part on.

You could even take to it with a Stanley knife and take off an inch and a half, but try sliding the plastic/rubber cover first.

Is it okay to cut some of the plastic exterior to get this in?

Absolutely, especially as the mounting part will then be covering the bare metal of the shackle.

The plastic exterior is there to prevent the lock from scratching your bike's paint.

I have an Abus granite. It rattles like hell. I had to stop using the mount that came with it due to the noise.
I have tried covering exposed metal with electrical tape but think something is needed where the shackle touches the other bit.

The easy KF works well on other Abus locks Ive seen though, another 25 quid to stop a rattle I've put up with for years....

Evans Cycles has both bits of the Ezy-KF setup for about 21 quid in total.

If you still have not sorted this rattling issue I had a bit of a breakthrough with my rattly lock.
I jammed a square of spongy non-slip mat material into the bottom of the lock, it basically filled the little gap between the end of the shackle and the end bit and pretty much eliminated the rattle. I should have glued it but didn't bother.

I have the Abus Granit Xplus Bordo this is a longer reach version than mine..https://www.abus.com/eng/Mobile-Secu...XPlus-Big-6500

folding is an advantage, and they are very secure..

Mine's a Kryptonite but i had the same issue - i rolled a rubber o-ring over each end of the U-shackle to bridge the gap between the plastic coatings of the two parts.

Kryptonite had already fitted similar rubbers, but they weren't quite snug enough. If they're too snug you'll make the lock mechanism sticky - i have to push on it only slightly to prevent turning the mechanism under load.

I have the same lock. Never heard a peep tho. Have you tried riding with noise-canceling earbuds?

update - jamming some spongey non slip stuff at the bottom of your abus granit is a bad idea. It makes it hard to lock sometings

have someone sew a bag to put the U lock in, since rattling is your primary issue.
