one of the reasons i use real fruit when touring, pears, apples, oranges and occasionally bananas is so i can discretely discard them where they will biodegrade. i would never drop packaging anywhere but the core of a piece of fruit does no real harm in the weeds on the roadside in my personal opinion. just as i wouldnt mind one being dropped in my yard. dogpoop is another thing entirely....

But as I wrote above, who's to say that at least some of cartridges are not from rifles and such. Many moons ago there used to be a swimming hole in a steep, wooded area of the city. Lots of cartridges at the bottom. They certainly were not from cyclists. And unless the OP examined them closely, they could also be nitrous oxide cartridges.

I was on a "group ride" years ago when one of the riders had a flat, changed his sewup tire, and hefted the old one over the guard rail. I retrieved it (at the time I was patching and re-using them), but I still thought that it was annoying that he just tossed it, whether or not he bothered to reuse them.
But, yes, I see far too many of the little CO2 cartridges on the streets. They can be used for other things, but so many are probably cyclists.
Oh, yes, the occasional tube too.
I don't worry too much about banana peels, orange peels, or apple cores, but I never throw them out in urban areas, but sometimes in rural areas, off the road, never to be seen again.
Do they still run those TV commercials with the old Indian standing on the side of the road with a frown and litter being thrown at his feet?

I also have no problem with banana peels, apple cores, or any other natural "trash" being discarded along trails as long as it's off the trail. I've thrown banana peels away way off the side of the road. They will biodegrade in short order, will fertilize other flora, and throwing out an apple core may even plant a new apple tree.
But paper, plastic, or metal trash should be packed away and disposed of at the next trash receptacle. There's no excuse for being lazy.

last fall took a break in a nice sunny spot where a stream fed a cranberry bog. nice & sunny w rocks to sit on. as I was having my lunch I looked down & saw a discarded needle. not stopping there again. would have picked it up to throw it out later & probably should have, but I was just too creeped out to touch it

I don't recall ever seeing an improperly discarded tube or CO2 cartridge and I'm certain I've never been on a ride with someone who intentionally chucked either. Maybe this is more of a MUP thing as opposed to regular cyclists? Folks who worry about an apple core or banana peel should ride a trail shared with horses, gain some perspective

I have seen plenty of firepits full of half-burned trash
The popular thing to do around here is to bag up one's dog poop, then leave the little plastic bag full of poop next to the trail.

The air rifle CO2 cartridges are not threaded on the end.
I don't know about the vap cartridges.
I've hit several empties with my front tire.. and they shot across the street.
I'm assuming they are mostly from Vap devices and people throw them out their car windows.
Most of the cyclist I know don't throw stuff on the ground.....but don't get me started on cyclist that spit during a group ride.....no no...

I see mostly bad habits tossed from car windows. Cigarette packs and empty beer cans are the most common around here.
Then there are the dog poop baggers that leave their payload behind on the trails and paths. If you are already picking it up, then why not throw it away?!

We get that here too but they don't seem to accumulate so I suspect the folks who left them pick them up on their way back out. I have to admit that, while I'll pack out most other kinds of litter, I draw the line on dog poop.

Yes, I know all too well... On my century ride, 400 riders and I get stuck next to the guy who wants to spit all the time. I felt even worse for the people behind him.
