Bikes: Catrike 559 I own some others but they don't get ridden very much.

Almost surely you're doing something wrong with your pump. I can't help you because I can't see what you are doing. Anybody local who bicycles regularly, however, should be able to show you what you are doing wrong. It's going to be something simple.

Bikes: Several, mostly not name brands.

Perhaps this can help?

I agree w/Retro. Is there a cyclist in your neighborhood?

Are you able to connect the pump to the valve stem? Does that part seem to go ok? Are you then able to operate the pump, and can you hear air being pushed into the tube?

There have been times when I've damaged brand new tubes by inadvertently putting holes into them while putting a tire back onto a rim. You might check for that.

Bikes: 2015 Workswell 066, 2017 Workswell 093, 2014 Dawes Sheila, 1983 Cannondale 500, 1984 Raleigh Olympian, 2007 Cannondale Rize 4, 2017 Fuji Sportif 1 LE

I would check a couple things (based on past error.) First, as Retro grouch and JonathanGennick note, it is possible you are not connecting the pump to the stem correctly.

I have had two issues here: One, where I forgot to unscrew the valve stem (assuming you have presta) and the other where I didn't get the pump far enough onto the stem to depress it and open it. In both cases you can pump, but you are forcing air out your pump seals (which is not good) and nothing is getting into the tube.

The other question (assuming the pump is attached properly and the valve open) is that you have punctured the tube while installing the tire. If you can hear the air going in and coming back out ....

I fit is not one of these things ...

it is probably something else. Good fortune to you, I guess.

Push on the tire from the other side. That will keep the stem from retracting.

Also, what does the valve stem look like? Does it look like the kind on car tires?

If you use a pump with a hose, make sure the hose connections are good and that the hose is free of leaks.

That is what I was wondering.

There are "Presta" and "Schrader" valves on bikes, and sometimes specific pump heads for each one.

If you have a Schrader pump and Presta valve, then you'll need an adapter which are common and cheap. Any good cycling store will have a bucket of the adapters to sell you.

Make sure you open the top of the valve for Presta, and often "burp" the tire slightly before attaching the pump.
