I'm an A-, but I'm old and don't really care about that kind of stuff anymore.

JanMM 03-05-18 08:52 PM

I've been vaccinated against both A and B................................................................hepatitis. In spite of the fact that I took a college course about The Psychology of Personality a few years ago, I don't know how vaccination affects personality.

LMAO

Sometimes I would classify myself as a D- personality. However, when riding I like to keep some simple stats (distance, average speed, which bike, weather conditions, etc.) on a spreadsheet. I do this when I lift also.

I also keep an inventory of my writing pens. I have a spreadsheet with household/yard expenses. I have a spreadsheet showing my guns, how many rounds I've shot through each gun, purchase price and purchase price of ammo. I also have a spreadsheet of my guitars, dates bought/sold, modifications, etc. All of my music CDs are in alphabetical order. I have a spreadsheet of all of my audio equipment with purchase price, purchase date, who I bought them from, etc.

On the other hand, I couldn't tell you when the oil was last changed in my car. https://www.thegearpage.net/board/smilies/messedup.gif

I'm sure there are a few mtb riders out there that fit this title's description but for the most part, most mtb people I've encountered are more laid back and approachable. Maybe it's just me, but does anybody else feel this way??

I consider myself more of a Type A person. I'm organized, sometimes hypersensitive to time and schedule, and I am driven toward closure and getting things done. That said, goals for my riding do not include racing. You would probably not perceive me as being competitive when riding with a group of friends. I do win from cycling...just in my own way that is internal and not always apparent from the outside looking in.

on a related note. type A or Type B. Only 2 personality types? please

unterhausen 03-06-18 07:25 AM

I feel like the main defining characteristic of roadies is that most of them are introverts. Which often looks like arrogance to people they don't know.

jimmie65 03-06-18 07:47 AM

There are 2 types of people in this world - those who believe you can divide people into 2 categories, and those who don't.

TimothyH 03-06-18 07:53 AM

Most here are talking about temperament, not personality.

There are four temperaments: Choleric (Type A), Phlegmatic, Melancholic and Sanguine. Assuming that most cyclists are choleric temperament is simply a mistake.

There are quite a few melancholics who expect the next flat any second and have five chains at home on standby for when this one wears out. We are generally not noticed because we ride solo most of the time.

those kinds of labels really oversimplify human nature & behavior, don't you think? my grandfather was type A, he passed that on to his kids, my Aunt & Uncles & Father, who passed that on to 3 of his 4 kids. being an Aries I migrated toward that as well. but I strive for self awareness & a more blended personality type: "driven w a lazy side" :innocent:

I hear ya! was out for a nice extended 30 mile loop on my roadifed front shock equipped hybrid w drop bars, narrow(er) road slicks & road saddle. humming along I pass a full kit poser. no biggie, whatever ... a minute or two later he passes me saying: "I'm not gonna be passed by a hybrid! that's a hybrid right?" I think I didn't answer as he went a head of me. little while later I passed him again, not intentionally, just because. don't think I said a word. just because it mattered to him, didn't mean it mattered to me

non-posers just pass you w/o incident. I marvel at their athleticism & natural born capabilities combined with training. those are true leaders & I gladly follow :thumb:

So everyone born between March 20 – April 19 will have the same, or similar personality types? (and if they read their daily horoscope, have the same stuff happen to them on a certain day as all other Aries's) :p

Seems a lot sillier than type A and type B, which at least has some actual study and science behind it.

On the other hand, maybe you are on to something... I'm a Libra and I do have a small scale to weigh my cycle components...

mrodgers 03-06-18 11:24 AM

Definitely not type A. Rode to DC with a huge group. Our little subgroup would leave at 6:30 in the morning while everyone else seemed to leave hours later. As we were stopped checking out sites halfway through the day, they would all buzz past us 18-20 mph heads down just flying along. Meanwhile, we're 300 yards into the mountainside crawling on our bellies because we saw a cave. Those were 80 mile days. We'd roll into the hotel stop hours behind everyone who started hours behind us.

2 weeks later the same subgroup from that trip rode across NY. Those were 60 mile days. We'd have to stop as we'd realize, hey, it's 5 pm and we only have 20 miles left. Need to extend it out and explore more.

I see now why you reached out to me: "Chief among the traits of a Libra is the inherent need for partnership." :thumb: but I don't get the scale thing :foo:

btw, you should see me in the same room w my Mother In Law, who is also an Aries ...:innocent:

I believe in ANY activity, be it sports related or otherwise, there would be a cross section of personality types. That's just life. To view a particular personality type as an identity of ANY group is more likely a result of bias or stereotype rather than reality based.
Now I guess the argument COULD be made that certain narrowly defined personality types tend to gravitate toward a particular area or activity thus giving the appearance such as suggested by the OP but then a stereotype is born, and forever afterward we identify that particular activity with a particular personality type.

And it could be I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Just to clarify...
Type (A)sshole,
Type (B)astard?

"The sign of Libra is symbolized by the scales."

"Librans seek equality, harmony, and balance. The scales are also a symbol of justice."

I find it difficult to believe you didn't know this, rr6. Never mind that I only remembered it after looking it up just prior to my previous post... :D

There are a lot of roadies on this site. They, and the site generally, take life way too seriously. It creates a clicky site compared to sites not only for cycling, but many other subjects. I have to remind myself that many people here are A) roadies and B) American. I still haven't worked out which is the biggest issue, with regards to people having their heads shoved hard up their asres.

BobbyG 03-06-18 05:13 PM

Sorry for my snide remark earlier. What I meant to say was I'm glad you met a group of nice people, but it is not a scientifically valid sample. While stereotyping cyclists according to their customs, style and "habitats" seems harmless, and it is, it also employs the type of tribalistic bias, and us versus them mentality that underlies racial and cultural bias, and I feel that the less we exercise the muscles of bias and bigotry the better.

I'm really a type 2 in the morning. Mostly type 1 the rest of the day unless lunch didn't agree with my decision making... Back to type 2.
