Type A personality??
 

I've heard of most road cyclist having an inherent Type A personality. I've seen it. I get it sometimes. However, I've never encountered a mountain biker with such personality. I'm sure there are a few mtb riders out there that fit this title's description but for the most part, most mtb people I've encountered are more laid back and approachable. Maybe it's just me, but does anybody else feel this way??

I am type A.....mtb guys are not type A, they are very chill people. I ride single track now and then and those folks are fun and crazy.

I'm Type A with some strong type C tendencies. I am very detail orientated and factual.

Type B all the way, or INTJ-A, if you're into the newer-fangled stuff.

Probably it's more that non-type A people group with other non-type A people. So your group of non-type A mountain bikers fail to see the type-A groups of mountain bikers because there is a "colored lens" thing going on. However the glasses come off and your bias to road bikers comes out by manifesting itself with your subjective observation that road bikers are type-A.

I'm sure there are a decent representation of both personality types in mountain bikers and road bikers.

And it's the same in every athletic type hobby.

Biking, hiking, skiing, softball, walking.....name something that requires exercise and there are people who do it to relax and people who get hyped up doing it.

And the same person can approach different hobbies in different ways.

I'm a very relaxed mellow biker. Speed isn't an objective for me. I like to enjoy the ride and the view while getting much needed exercise. I'm very type B on a bike. It's my personal path to Zen. I see road cyclists speeding past me and wonder "What's their hurry?"

On a ski slope on the other hand....I have 1 objective...Down. Fast. GO! I am not a casual gentle enjoy the crisp mountain air skier. I'm a get me to the bottom of the mountain in a manner that leaves a contrail behind me skier.

So people approach different hobbies in different ways. And there's many different approaches to every hobby.

And shockingly...I ride with other mellow riders. And I ski with other crazy people. So people with common approaches to an activity tend to group together.

Do you mean competitive racer types , not everybody on a bike , on the road , in all countries world wide.. ?

I hadn't realized there were only two personalities.

I like to road cycle, but I'm a pretty laid back person. The only person I've ever competed against on a bike is myself.

You can't stereotype like that, mountain bikers smoke more weed

All road cyclists are Type A. They are also all Presbyterians from Connecticut who make $68,421, have a terrier named Stu and two children named Alice and Phil. During the summers all road cyclists take a week off their busy work schedule to stay at a cabin in the Finger Lakes area. All road cyclists are named Steve and ride a BMC.

Hmm, maybe I need to smoke more weed? Well, maybe not since I see myself as more type B personality, anyway. I used to race a long time ago but was never really that good. Maybe that explains it... :innocent:

because mtb riders dont "hog" the roads... they dont need to develop a thick public skin.

Cycling is like sailing. If there are two of you and you are both going in the same direction... you're racing !

I've always been a type A, ...cycling or not. Although, on a bike, I can sometimes morph over to a B.

The only thing I know about MTBers is that they tend to have hairier legs.

Psychoanalysis is total quackery without some real scientific method on the analysis.

If I stop to take a break I'll be more then happy to talk. If you can keep my pace its the same. If you drop me heck yeah the race is on till I give up and return to my previous cadence, if I drop you then have a nice ride :thumb:

Road biking is very Zen. As to mtbers being type b :lol: all my mtb buddies start out every ride with wheelies. Which I need to learn :)

I couldn't tell you which personality type I fit into.

Maybe Type M for Machka ... my own personal personality type. :)

Successful road racing cyclists? Nope. There isn't room for a bunch of competing Type A personalities on a team in a sport that selects and promotes one person above the team.

The whole "Type A/B" personality gimmick was based on a very limited, flawed study. It doesn't really apply outside of that limited context.

The Myers & Briggs types might come closer. But I still doubt there's a typical type among solo road cyclists, certainly not in terms of ability. I've met strong, fast road cyclists who prefer riding solo and others equally strong and fast who prefer group rides.

Some cyclists don't like to be passed, if they get passed they soon pass you like they are in a race. I get a kick out of this especially if they keep looking back over there shoulder. I then just tail them to annoy them and laugh every time they look back.

Since everything can be explained in terms of the need to f--- your mother, it has zero predictive value, and is thus completely vacuous.

It's been a long time since I took psychology. Does type A mean nerd and type B mean smokes pot?
