I'm not averse to riding in cold weather but it's harder to get motivated plus the road salt can be a problem. I started skiing ~4 years ago, it's a nice complement to cycling. Skiing has been a fun challenge to get to level 5. Got a couple of bumps & strains along the way, I figure you probably have enough skill to avoid those beginner things.
... so, my skiing became more occasional.

74 and sun for my 64 miles on Friday, just about the same for Saturday's 25 mile trail ride.

Put down 35 miles today, would've gone longer but the trail wasn't quite plowed far enough. Oh well the toes were cold when I got back. Interestingly (ironically?) talked to two cyclists today, one on this trail with a 650b tourer on the tail end of a 40+ mile ride, another back in town I see on Strava often. Most sociable I've been for awhile
Good ol Midwest, it will be 50°F on Monday, was 45°F and no snow last Thursday.

I think this thread should be closed to anyone living where the temperature is over 50 degrees through March :-) ... I was feeling good about my Saturday ride in the upper 30s and strong headwinds :-(

The salt is the deal breaker for me. We had a warm spell last Winter which ate away at the snow and some rains came and washed away the salt. Then we had crazy cold arctic winds. I did 18 miles in weather that started out at 12f and then got to 8f half way through. I made one or two stops for hot beverages and glove warmers. If I had better gear I would have suffered a bit less on that ride, but it definitely beat riding through slush and salt.
I need to get an aluminum frame beater bike that I won't feel so bad about using out there. Winter lethargy can be an issue. I don't ski and I am not interested in it so that makes my options a little more limited.

It's nice to have a separate winter bike--alu frame might help but I find the main problem is salt stripping chain lube. Beater or nice bike, one will have to clean & lube chain after ride with a lot of road salt spray. I'd like to try a Gates belt S/S even though some folks report belts don't always work perfectly in snow.

Yeah, I'll ride down into the 20's ... teens is getting a bit cold. When I got my Trek Domane, I kept my old Canondale as a winter/bad weather bike so I spare the newer bike from the slush and salt. When I was in my twenties and early thirties, skiing was my favorite sport ... just loved it. Married someone from the Philippines so skiing isn't so big there
... so, my skiing became more occasional.

As a Metro Bostonian, I finally got the wherewithal to read this thread in its entirety.
On Monday (3/19/18) I posted this feeble attempt to comfort my fellow Bostonians:
Finally,
+10 to @dennis336. There is schadenfreude (enjoyment obtained from the troubles of others..MerriamWebster), but those gratuitous remarks to a thread about Winter woes are…are…

Two weeks from spring and we're getting a foot of snow (3/10/18) .... I'm so depressed

… BTW,though I didn't ride today (2/27/18), I was thinking that after this weekend's heavy rains, the streets might be clean enough to bring out the pristine carbon fiber bike, in storage since December. The studs stay on the beater through most of March…
…After today’s rainy deluge (3/2/18), the streets should be pristine (except for downed trees and branches), and I’ll bring out my carbon fiber bike for a ride I describe as “ethereal.”

@rholland1951 nice report and ride by the looksof it, temperatures aside. I love the returning sounds of the red wing tipped blackbirds.
Hoping that the reports of 6 to10 inches on Wednesday (3/21/18) are over exaggerated as I cant take anymore.

…below is an image of a bike lane on Trumbull Ave. in Detroit. I believe this really represents the worst of all worlds...
Hi @mrv (from a native Detroiter),
First of all, thanks for that photo [see below], so evocative of summer riding. We are having an unusually prolonged winter here…17° F this morning (3/219/16) with inches of frozen snow on the ground and more predicted this week...

So all you depressed folks, I've just got to make it worse.
High of 54, no clouds, negligible winds, zero chance of precipitation. Commuting to work is going to be a joy.

Thanks for your reply. I actually like the four seasons we enjoy in New England, except for the Winter salt keeping me off my pristine carbon fiber.
Does a near-perfect weather place exist?
Personally the only weather I don’t like to ride in is rain, and no rain would be a desert. That said, I really like riding in all seasons, even winter. So my near perfect weather would present the best of all seasons, without the extremes, and I already live here.
Nice, albeit short Spring with beautiful blossoms and that first few weeks of relief from Winter; glorious summer; cool crispy Autumn with colorful foliage; and even a bracing, and challenging Winter, but not one impossible to ride in. I have a Specialized S-Works, a Specialized Diverge Elite, and a Cannondale Mountain Bike, and I have posted
So I guess my bikes say about me, what those car models say about their owners.

…I'm very happy with my Specialized S-Works for dry weather riding, but my Cannondale Mountain bike was pretty heavy and cumbersome as a Wet/Winter beater.
So I recently bought a Specialized Diverge Elite aluminum bike as a wet weather beater, and it rides nearly as nicely as the S-Works, so I'm very happy with the Diverge Now… my riding needs are completely met.
I liken my three bikes to a Lamborghini, a Lexus, and a Humvee.

Today we will be getting either 3-6" or 6-12" of snow. We live right on the line of the two forecasts. Oh, and 40 mph winds. This really, really sucks.

!And many don't even list their locationHey, lighten up. On Sunday I had a beautiful day for cycling, 54 degrees and a sunny day.Today is Wednesday and there's easily 3 inches of snow on the ground, very icy roads, and the snow is still coming down.
Yeah, I teased a bit but it was meant in a good natured way, especially since I knew on Sunday that snow was likely coming.

Hi Rachel and OldTryGuy,
My post was sardonic, but written in camaraderie with restraint when I wrote: Actually @rachel120, I think we even had a couple of days in the 50’s in February. In fact, I dislike those brief warm spells since I need to carry more stuff to anticpate a wider temperature range that will dissipate so quickly.
And, OldTryGuy, I did insert your location (SW FL) into my quote of you. BTW, I don’t list mine under my avatar, but it is “D’uh.”

Local forecast was 1 to 3 inches. NWS Winter Storm Warning says 4-8 inches. Current conditions according to Weather Underground is a little over 3 inches....and it's still snowing.
I'm tired of these nor'easters. I want to move back south to hurricane country.
