I have a pair of rear painners as old as my bike lol , 24yrs old, they are, unsurprisingly, starting to fall apart! What are a good waterproof set for both commuting and general use ie shopping

A lot of posters on the touring forum like Ortliebs. Go over there to read what others have to say about them.

I go grocery shopping , Pop the Ortliebs off, take them into the store,
Checker fills them , put them back on , and ride home..

Only thing better was when I got a 5 cent credit off the tab, for not needing a carryout bag.

Has anyone mentioned Ortlieb yet? Mine are seven years old at the moment and I use the for everything, tours, groceries, Home Depot, they are always on the bike.

For painners I'd recommend aspirin. For paniers, ortlieb.

Ortliebs. Can regularly find the back rollers on sale in the $130 range for a pair, or last year's color schemes sometimes under $100.

The roll-down Ortliebs are also nice because if it is not raining you can leave them unrolled (open to the sky) and this enables you to carry a fair amount more than when they are rolled down.

I have a KLR 650. I say that because we are famous for being cheap.

I bought a set of Nashbar waterproof bags a couple of years ago. Caught them on sale. Used them to ride across the U.S. last year. No problems!

Ortliebs it is then , thankyou everyone, I would rather pay out a bit more on something that will last and yes they look expensive but together with fixing my old bike it's still a dam sight cheaper than a car!

Ignore him. The way he hates Ortliebs, you'd think a set of them killed his parents and ran off with his wife and kids and turned his dog against him.

BTW...I personally like the Packer series. The Back Packers are very large, come with a small outside pocket and you don't have to deal with rolling. More convenient if you are making multiple stops for groceries.

I had a pair of Nashbars. For the sale price, if one is going to use them just occasionally, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

Big difference between the KLR and a bike? No suspension on a bike (well, at least most bikes panniers are going on), I had a big issue with my Nashbars bouncing off on rough roads, the latching system alone was worth the price of the upgrade to Ortliebs.

Naw, he's jealous that he didn't have any. If he got a pair of Ortliebs, his wife would come back to him, his dog would lick him, and his pickup truck would start running again.

If the waterproofing can be done at home instead of a factory, I highly recommend Lone Peak panniers. They're made in SLC and last a long time. When I had mine for touring, I first sprayed them with shoe waterproof spray and then lined the clothing sections with plastic bags. The problem with Ortleibs is that they aren't sectionals (for those of us who need organization).

I picked up a used pair of REI's a few years back at a garage sale for $10.bucks and treated the nylon with a 3M spray waterproofing. They have zippered compartments and lift easily off with handles for shopping and have kept my gear dry since.

I have Ortliebs and I am very impressed with the waterproofness but I am not with the hard plastic attachments. I was only 3 days in to a 58 day Transamerica ride when my partner bumped my Ortlieb panniers with her Ortlieb panniers and mine fell right off. The hooks that attach the panniers to the rack snapped right off at the arc. They snapped off so easily, we thought it must be a defective item especially since my friend had the exact same attachments on her pannier and nothing happened to hers. I ended up shipping the panniers back home since they were useless with the broken attachments. When I returned home 2 months later and asked Ortlieb customer service for a replacement since I only used them for 3 days, they refused citing they were involved in a crash and they will not cover it. I sent them photos and explained that it seems evident I got a bad one but they refused to replace the attachments and directed me to purchase replacements. They were very cordial in the email exchange but I must say I was really disappointed. Especially since I had to buy a replacement pannier on the road (not Ortlieb) to finish my trip.

But do you have a milk crate? Great bike.

I have Axiom bags that have been flawless.

I like Arkel panniers, too.

I own both Ortlieb ( Bike-Packer Plus) and Arkel and both are an excellent quality product with much to commend them. The Ortlieb bags are lighter and have larger capacity, and are definitely better in the rain than the model of Arkel bags I’ve got.

But, I think the Arkel attachment system is much better than the Ortliebs. In fact I’ve had an Ortlieb come flying off the rack more than once after hitting some rough patches. That’s virtually impossible with the Arkel cam-lock system.

Both are simple to attach and remove one-handed and both should last an astonishing long time. I’d say you can’t go wrong with either product, but as you point out, you pay for that quality.
