Bikes: Huffy 3 speed All Pro, Schwinn Third Avenue (21 speed)
Such a deal?
I was in a Goodwill store yesterday. They had a brand new bicycle there. It still had the plastic covering the emblems it was so new. It was a 21 speed with Shimano shifters and aluminum wheels. Apparently it was donated because of some very minor paint blemishes. On sale for only $39.99!
Now for the catch. You knew there had to be one. It is a Schwinn Third Avenue model. Yep, a “Walmart” special. Anyways, I bought figuring I could always sell off the parts for $40. Heck, I’m not proud. I’ll ride a beater. I know some here disdain “big box” bicycles. But what do you think? Was this a deal or not?

It's a good bike for 40 but not really upgrade worthy and you're not going to sell any of its parts off. That said, make sure it's assembled properly and just ride the heck out of it and enjoy it.

Hey for $40 I would buy it and keep it as a loaner for family or friends who may want to go for a ride. There are only a few people I would loan my good bikes to, so being able to pull out servicable bike like that would be handy.
I also have a cottage on Lake Michigan that gets used by dozens of family and friends. I would just leave it there for communal use.
It is also a great gift for college students. My son went through 3 bikes in college due to theft.

Are there any new Schwinns not sold at Walmart these days?
I'd likely have spent $40 for it if it were brand new, then maybe save it for a few years for when my son gets big enough to ride it, or else just use it as a beater bike and then let my son ride it.

Bikes: Several, mostly not name brands.
The big box stores here donate their damaged bikes to the Salvation Army, and the Salvation Army brings them to our charity "earn-a-bike" program that provides bikes as transportation for people in our jobs skills programs. 15 hours of work and they can claim a bike. The adult-size bikes go to this program, the children's size bikes we assemble and check over and give back to the Salvation Army, who uses them as birthday and Christmas presents for children in families receiving their services.

At $40, I think it's more of a question of whether you have room for it. At that price, if you get any use out of it, it's a win. Should be ok for light duty or kid use at least in the short run.
