The world needs more people like Jim and fewer bike thieves.

If he's so worried about things going sideways that he has to have someone with him, he should make friends with a few cops who would agree to take turns going along in plainclothes. Then nobody would need to "dial 911", the guy with him could just bust the crook on the spot. This IS grand theft, after all, and shutting off a big chunk of it could give the local LE's performance records a boost.

There's an informal vintage motorcycle group in Chicago that got started when the internet was new that got started after someone had their motorcycle stolen.

Just don't think with the ever increasing cutbacks, preventing bike theft is going to be top of the police's agenda sadly ://

The article is maddening in that it makes no mention what Jim actually does to recover said bikes. Does he steal them back? Does he brace the seller and threaten to call the cops if the bike is not surrendered? Does he buy it back and then return it to the rightful owner for the reward or a fee or for the warm fuzzies?

Here's a more in depth story about Bike Batman from 2016. Goes into his methods and sources. Might be the same guy. He's never been named in these stories that pop up every year or so.

Gotta say, if all he's recovered in 7 years is $14,000 worth of bikes, I hope he hasn't quit his day job.

Can't be the same guy--Spokane and Seattle are at opposite ends of a fairly large state. Almost 300 miles apart, and a world away culturally.

The stolen bikes that Jim seeks out are the high-end bikes that cost thousands of dollars
And 14K in 7years? Jim is a good guy doing this but not a great detective or the city does not have 'enough' thieves / high end bikes kidding... loved what he is doing
