Du Rag

I’m getting pretty bad helmet burn on shaved head. Sunscreen has destroyed the plastics and foam interior of a helmet so not going that route again.

Have tried 3 now “breathable cooling” skullcaps off Amazon. They all sucked. Wondering about those silky du rags.

I'm a daily motorcycle rider, and have found that cotton helmet liners work best for me. Particularly these - American Roadrider Head Skins. Thin, comfortable, and apparently, as I look around now, hard to find.
Here's an Ebay listing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/166451973584

But, might try a cotton liner. Simple, black, non-bikery looking. I cycle through a bunch of them, clean one each day during the summer, and just rinse them in the sink and put them back in line for the next use.

Yes, get a dew rag, sweatVac or any other thing you prefer to wear between your head and your helmet. I had tan spots developing on my scalp too when I started riding a lot. You might have to try different things to find what you prefer.

A sweatVac was what they were selling at the LBS for those of us with little hair on our head. The model I have is made from material that is similar to what most jerseys are made of. I actually find it seems to cool my head when I ride at some speed. I guess it lets the sweat evaporate evenly over my head. Similar to sun sleeves. And it seems like I have less sweat drippin in my eyes if I pull it down lower on my forehead. But YMMV.

I wear a standard bandana folded appropriately. Don't overthink it. I ride in the Florida heat and they work.

I wear a nice cycling cap from a known quality and quantity not junk from Amazon. Usually a moisture wicking one but cotton ones work well and if it is hot you just soak it. Walz and Pace make great stuff and I think my 3 moisture wicking ones are all Coolmax which works well.

When I was getting tiger stripes I found the Halo Headband Bandana worked best and slowed the sweat. Halo has discounts at times.

Recently got a Bontrager road helmet with the Wavecel. It was on sale and I needed a road helmet. I had fallen and my old helmet hit the asphalt. Anyway the Wavecel cuts down on the sun and is not hot if moving. I was surprised. I would not use it for mountain bike single track. I just use the Halo headband with the Wavecel helmet. Slows the sweat.

Although applying some from an uncontaminated source -- i.e., one from which no double-dipping has ever occurred -- to soothe those cuts might not be the worst idea.

Would such a person be referred to as a butt head?🙂

I have the same problem . My solution is a helmet with no top holes. I have this BBB Tithon:

The fit is on the small side.
Another choice would be the Kask Infinity- it has a sliding panel on top which exposes forward poinintg holes:

Bontrager charge wavecell:

Bolle The One has removeable panels covering the top holes:

Abus YADD-1 and Lazer Urbanize are other choices. I made this list a few years ago so maybe some of these helmets no longer available or have since changed designs.

Yet another solution, if the holes are narrow or small enough, is to stuff cushion foam into the openings to block them.

I have the Halo skull cap and the bandana cap and the skull cap is far more comfortable wearing a helmet. The knot at the back bothers me. I get about 6 to 8 months of constant wear out of one before the rubber "dam" starts coming off. I usually call Halo and they either offer a return or give me a good discount for a replacement.

It's worth it to me because even when it's 98 degrees and 90% humidity and I'm sweating like a w**** in church the sweat doesn't roll into my eyes. The Halo bands really work.

Ain't that the truth! Hahaha....

nice idea but looks HOT

Gave me an idea though. I’m going to duct tape light UV resistant fabric over the openings. It will look stupid but function over fashion.

i like the feeling of no skull cap as another layer

The irony of the o.p. is not lost on this poster. The progenitors of the original Durag's were unlikely to suffer any harm whatsoever, from the Sun, anywhere in North America.

You guys don't use BUFF type tube scarves as helmet liners? Here in Korea they're completely ubiquitous for on the head and for covering your face. I have a bunch of them that I use on the bike and I throw them in my backpack for hiking for headbands and wristbands to keep as much sweat out of my eyes and off my fingers as possible. I actually only have one original BUFF branded one, and it hasn't held upas well as some of the generic $2 ones from the local equivalent of Dollar Tree or whatever.
