I said I’d post a pic of what they were painting when I got “The Speech” last week on the trail.
Can’t find thread so for anyone who was interested. Looks indigenous

If 'indigenous' means the 1960s 'Mod'/Peter Max era, then I'd believe it. I was thinking it would be more like the pictographs found in the southwestern USA but with colors, and the colors made from natural plant materials (seeds, fruits, plant sap, insect larvae, etc) or even colored sands from local sources. Some of those original old ones look really interesting. This just looks like someone's semi-abstract art done with paint from a local hardware store.

Yes. I dismounted and walked on the right.
It could be a rainbow indigenous thing (two spirit). That would effectively cover two disenfranchised groups. If it was city-sanctioned and funded, at least city council is economizing.

During a 2-14 cross-PA tour I got ride "Graffiti Highway" before the new owners of the property later covered it with dirt due to liability concerns. The property is the former section of PA 61 that had to be relocated because of the underground first that is burning in the area of the former town of Centralia, PA.

The abandoned stretch of PA Turnpike also has a lot of "art work".

I went down a rabbit hole a few months ago when I read about the last 60 years of the fire. It's wild- from the multiple instances of incompetence that likely led to its start, to the handful of people who distrust the government(coal rights if the town ceases to exist) and were allowed to stay, to the water geysers that explode in towns miles away due to underground air pressure and water table levels.
Antracite coal is relatively hard. More difficult to get burning, but once you do, it’s tougher to put out. It’s still mined up that way and used in industrial applications. It’s also still used to heat older houses. I have a friend who lives about 35 miles from Centralia. Her house is heated by coal.
Anthracite loading area near Mahanoy City, PA I rode passed in 2022:

Fun fact: The recognized inventor of cable TV, John Walson, was from Mahanoy City, and it was the first place to have CATV.

Looks like a few artistically applied tire tracks would be enhancing. As a citizen I'm entitled to contribute to public participation works of art. I'm sure that I read that somewhere.
I must admit that it does have that charming grade school project look

Trippy indeed. I have had this acrylic on canvas that was my Mom's hanging for a couple of decades while passively for sale. Even had it consigned at a local shop for a long while. No takers. The Lovely Bride finally asked me to take it down; just a little too trippy after all those years, it seems

When artwork is on a surface that is intended for traveling on, then it's expected by the artist that it'll be walked on, ridden on and other such. You might be disrespecting the artist by not doing so!
