What does the morality of returning what is not yours have to do with the monetary value of the item? or to put it another way, at what dollar value does theft become moral?

Yep. If I find something, or come across something that I didn't pay for or wasn't given to me, it doesn't belong to me. SOMEBODY paid for that, somehow. And it belongs to them.

I really don't think I can get in any trouble for keeping it. Whoever dropped the second package outside my door must have lived in my apartment. If they signed for it or whatever, its on them. I techinically never recived the package because they knocked and walked away.

As far as the moral aspect, Im a pretty moral person. I give money to the homeless, throw away cigarette butts, put money in peoples parking meters. But when it comes to some corporate retailer like performance who would ask me to take 2 hours out of my day to ship this back to them, I say screw it. Just because they retail in bike parts dosen't mean they don't suck. If anyone wants to buy some crank bros candys, send me a pm.

They suck for selling you cheap pedals and then resending the package as lost without question when your neighbor had the original package the whole time? It's sounds like they are a good company to do business with and YOU suck.

wah wah. I was on the phone with them for hours before they finally shipped it. If it was wall mart, would you return it?

I've never set foot in a Wal-Mart and have no plans to.

Taking something that is not yours is taking something that is not yours, no matter if it comes from Performance or an LBS.

BTW, you know it's wrong. If you didn't think it was wrong you wouldn't be looking for justification on an internet message board.

If I'm not mistaken the technical name for the crime is theft by deception. But I'd be more worried about bad karma than the cops.....

It figures, it he had to ask, I guess we could have assumed he was going to keep both. Life is short, if you don't like Performance, don't buy from them, but taking advantage of a mistake serves no purpose. I agree with Ziemas, more of a karma thing.

Well now...that is an entirely new dimension isn't it? We've now crossed the threshold from the morally dubious question of "should I keep it?" into a new question that I believe will leave little doubt in the minds of the people reading this as to the current state of your morality, at least as it can address this issue: "Should I SELL it?"

No matter how you justify it, you still have stolen from performance. They did you a service by offering the product at a price that beats the compitition, gave you a quick reship, and did thier best to make everything right with you. In return, you steal from them and just slightly lower thier profits. Enough people do this, and performance goes out of business or raises prices. But hey, what do you care, they suck, right?

Edit: I have half a mind to email performance a link to this thread so they can track you down.

You should let Performance know what happened, as keeping the goods makes you a thief. Personally, I've had bikes stolen, so I tend to think not so highly of thieves of any kind.

Similar situation happened to me. I ordered some clothes (Around the 12th of March), and then 3 weeks later, they never came. I called Performance and they said the ground shipper they used went bankrupt, and Performance had to go pick up all the shipments the carrier had b/c the carrier just left them sitting in warehouses after they went bankrupt. So Performance re-shipped my order towards the end of March and sent it 2-day FedEx for free.
