After 18 years in Rhode Island, here are the two shops that have given consistent, good service:
In Providence, RI: The Hub located on Brooks Street: www.thehubprovidence.com (Jack and Jesse used to run a shop in Woonsocket, RI)
other RI shop: Stedman's in Wakefield, RI
My Western Mass recommendation: Laughing Dog Cyclerly in Amherst, Mass.

Urbane Cyclist in Toronto. Not the best selection of bikes in the world, but I really like the people.

the NorCal Cycling shop on College Ave. In Santa Rosa, California.
Not only was the salesman helpful in walking me through the process of buying my new bike, but when I showed him the bike I was looking at with the component set I wanted he showed me a similar bike with a little less carbon and a less agressive stance far closer to my "comfort zone" price. That I spent the additional money on components and gear should in no way be taken into account.
They also fitted the bike to me for free. I'm sure for some people this is just the way of the world but I've gone through six years and four bike shops and no one has every offered to do this more me for less than a couple of hundred dollars.
