Trainers

Even though I live in Hawaii and can easily ride year round, I've been thinking about getting a trainer.

There are two I've been particularly considering. One is by Kurt and is a fluid trainer. Reviews I've found have been excellent and I was particularly interested when they talked about how they never had trouble with it leaking.

Also, I have a brother who has been a machinist for decades. He told me the Kurt company makes top quality stuff for major manufacturing companies. Apparently the owner got interested biking (or his son did). In their quest for a trainer, they didn't find any they liked so they started making their own.

The other is called 1 Up USA CPR A-2000. All aluminum. This also received great reviews from users - even better than the Kurt (average 4.92 out of 5). Has a lifetime warranty I blieve.

Any comments?

Bob

I bought a 1upusa trainer and I have to admit I wasn't 100% satisfied, do a search for 1upusa and you can see my report as to why. However their customer service is so excellent, that if like me you didn't like it, then you will get a full refund. I would suggest giving them a try, and if you don't like it then pick up the kurt.

Personally though I'd much rather ride outdoors. Trainers are good for interval work though and of course warm up for races. I was bored to death of them by the end of this winter though

I read it - and all the other references I found. Seems both are good.

I also prefer riding outdoors, but sometimes the timing doesn't work out, or the weather. Also, I figure a trainer would be useful for some specific training.

For one thing, on a trainer, I can practice my peddle stroke one leg at a time. But another thing is that when I'm actually riding a bike, I find it harder to do specific training drills. My mind just wants me to get where I'm going in a hurry. For the same reason, I find it hard just to ride - I need to be going someplace. For me that means 12.5 miles to Waikiki, eat, maybe spend time at the beach, ride back. I do this typically 5 times a week (I have no car).
