bike route mapping tool
I'm looking for a good bike route mapping tool using Google Maps. I stumbled upon one some time ago while browsing the forums but I recently closed the tab that contained the link. I've used VeloRoutes a few times but there is a bug when saving the route and it occasionally has difficulty undoing sections of the drawn route.
Suggestions, please...
Thanks

I like Topo Route Easy to use and you don't have to sign up for an account.
P,S, This was just discussed not that long ago. You really should search.

Those are all very good suggestions... and talk about prompt replies. Thanks very much... now I have no idea which one to use.
I'm thinking Bikely and RouteSlip are the two I prefer since all routes created are easily tracked down via your profile and RouteSlip has a section dedicated to discovering routes nearby. Also, RouteSlip automatically centers on my location, which is very cool. Easy to do, I'm sure, but cool.
MapMyRun is also a strong contendor but I'm unable to figure out how to zoom in on a location, so it gets dinged for that little thing.
spinnaker: Is that so? Sorry about that. I guess the keywords I selected could have been better because I didn't find anything promising on the first page of search results.

Routeslip.com does not seem to be maintained. There are a couple of active threads discussing it. I recommend mapmyride.com instead anyway as it has flawless integration with Google Earth.
Zooming in can be done in two ways - if you have a wheel/scroll mouse put the pointer where you want to zoom and then scroll in or out. If you do not have a scroll mouse then you will have to click on the +/- tool in the upper right hand side.
You can find out a what at least one other person thinks of a comparision between bikely and mapmyride by visiting https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ight=mapmyride. In addition one of the founders of mapmyride has joined the forums, you can read his introductory post here: https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ight=mapmyride
Long story short, both tools are really great and I like both.

I'm partial to MapMyRide -- https://www.mapmyride.com
We just added a bunch of new features specifically for cyclists:
* Topo maps and some advanced elevation stuff (ascent/descent/min/max)
* Cue Sheet Support -- ie, click on the markers to provide printable turn-by-turn directions
* Auto-Routing / Follow Roads -- click from point A to point B and the system will draw the route
* Auto-Routing w/ Cue Sheets -- if Auto-Routing is on, Cue-Sheets will be auto populated
Send me your questions / comments using my feedback system.
In terms of the zooming in -- there is the standard google map zoom bar, and you can also use your scroll-wheel of your mouse if you have one! Sometimes people complain that when they zoom in, they can't plot around a marker. If that's the case, you can temporarily disable markers ('Display Markers') in the 'MapSettings' area to the left.
Another complaint is the map jumps around too much -- again, please unselect 'Auto-Center' in the 'MapSettings'
Take a look and let me know what yo think!
Cheers,

Ok, I think I understand about zooming into location now -- To the left of the map, you'll see a 'QuickStart' area -- enter in an address there. ie, '92109', 'Italy', 'Paris, France', '555 Main St, NY, NY', etc.
Also, you can find local routes two ways:
1) Click on the Search link (top nav) and do a search based on location and keyword
2) Navigate to a location (using QuickStart) then click on 'Find' -> 'Show Public Routes on Map' so you can visually see all routes in a specific area according to criteria (distance, etc.)
Here's a last tip for all you all -- if you are using a smaller resolution and want to take advantage of full screen to plot your rides, click on the 'Full Screen' button!
This site is definitely a work in progress but it's my passion so if you have any ways you think it could be better, just let me know!
Cheers,
-Kevin

Kevin, You are the man!
Now all i need is a program to covert my Garmin GDB files. I manually put in 2 routes in MD. I was surprised to not see any. Oh well, someone has to be first. The only downer i can see is that while i have elevation, it doenst tell me the total accumulative feet of ascent or descent. Though i do like the min/max. If im not mistaken that tells me the longest single climb? The real impressive feature is the autoplotting onto Google Earth. Thats pretty slick!

Also, I have a bit of a hard time finding the "segment" to compare it to the elevation profile. For example, I can see a steep 100' climb between 18 & 19 on the "graph" below, but I don't really know where 18 & 19 are on the map.
Other than that, I've found that sometimes you need a bit of care to make sure the route doesn't do something screwy (like double back on itself for a few hundred feet at "confusing" intersections) and I would like to be able to put in longer routes... ie, zoom out & pan 20 miles away (on the same road) and have it take that point.
Finally, it's a great tool & I'm quite taken with it, just some improvement suggestions (since you asked).

For GPS imports you have two options:
1) On the Map, click on 'Import > Import from GPX/GPS' that will allow you to upload converted GPX files.
2) Download the GPS Import Tool that can import routes right from your Garmin unit.
Let me know how that works for you.
Cheers,
