Rather than ride in the Wilson 100 yesterday, I volunteered to work at one of the rest stops.
I missed not riding with everyone but it was fun talking with each rider that stopped and seeing the bikes. And it was nice to hear all of the "thanks for doing this" from most of the riders.

The youngest rider looked like he was about 15 years old. The oldest was about 65.
I saw old bikes, touring bikes, a hybrid , a few cyclocross bikes, recumbents, a few tandems, and lots of new and new-looking road bikes.
Riders were wearing everything from expensive team shorts and jerseys to T-shirts and mountain bike shorts.

Most riders headed for the Powerade and Fig Newtons (after they hit the porta-potty). We ran out of Fig Newtons before bananas.
And sadly we had lots of Moon-Pies left. In the south that's almost criminal


Anyone else ever worked a rest stop, driven a sag vehicle, or helped organize/promote an event?

Yep - drove a support vehicle for a ride last year. I found it really fun, almost more fun than riding in the event (though I did really want to be out there too....) Great for bike perving too!

I'd encourage everyone to get involved in the support side at least once in their lives - it makes you really appreciate those who do it even more.

Yes, our bike club put on a century for two years, before we folded tent. It was a lot of fun, and since we used one of the local Ham Radio clubs, we had constant communications between all the stops, as well as several radio equipped motorcycles patrolling the route for accidents, flats, and where to send a sag wagon for those that gave up! All in all, it was quite fun. Sure meet a lot of riders that way.

And speaking of sag foods, I discovered a great snack item on one of the BRAGs, but I can't find them much anymore. Raisin Bisquits. They are flat square cookie-type dough with a layer of ground up raisins in the middle. I think they were made by Sunshine, but I could be wrong on that. They are a little dry so you have to wash them down with something, which makes you take in more fluids.

I agree Ron. I do the first rest stop of our century every year and I love it. It's great to meet folks riding and seeing where they are from etc.

Pointyhead - raisin biscuits are made by Sunshine Co. and can still be found in some grocery stores. I have Publix get them for me. They are a fantastic source of carbs and they keep well under extreme conditions. Throw in a Yohoo and you have a great pre ride meal.

No RC Cola either. Just water and Powerade.
No banana or vanilla Moon Pies, just chocolate.

What was the ride, name of the club, and where was it held?

No, This was called the Montezuma Century, and we went from Warner Robins, through Byron, Ft. Valley to Montezuma and back.

We were the Central Georgia Cyclists, not to be confused with the Middle Georgia Cyclists out of Macon. But we had some internal strife, mainly because a lot of people saw the club as another service organization and wanted to do all types of community stuff. The rest of us just wanted to ride our bikes...
