Newbie needs some help
I am looking to get a bike to help get back in shape, I am 6'1" and 250lbs. I was thinking of getting a road bike. but they look pretty expensive and I dont want to break one at my size. So I am flipping between a Hardtail MTB or a Road bike\hybrid. I do know that I would like to go with the clip less pedals and proper bike shoes.
For my tax return I am getting $1300 that I will be able to put on a bike and accessories, I can add to that if need be. but I would like to get a decent bike, but since it is just for fitness right now it doesnt need to be competition ready.
thanks in advance.

Comfort is the most important thing in choosing a bicycle, especially for someone who hasn't rode for years. If you aren't comfortable, you won't ride, simple as that.
Go test ride a few at a bike shop within your budget and see how they feel. $1300 will get you plenty of bicycle no matter what you decide.

I wouldn't recommend spending $1300 in your situation. A lot of people end up discovering they want something different from what they first buy, but you really tend not to discover that until you've put in some miles on a bike you don't like. Of course, you may be the lcuky one who gets it right the first time.
I think you'd be better off finding a decent used bike or maybe even borrowing one until you know more about what kind of riding you're going to want to do. Then you can go spend the tax refund on something really sweet and sell the used bike for whatever you paid for it.
My recommendation: look for a used Specialized Hardrock. Get an older one with a rigid fork. Be sure to get the right size frame for you. It may takes some patience, but I'll bet you can find one.

You're my size...I ride road bikes with no problem. Decent wheelset and you're golden.
If you are looking to do some road cycling and want something that can also take wider tires, fenders, etc, in case you want to do xcross or light touring or commuting, try a Bianchi Volpe, which is in the $8-900 range new. But like others have said, shop your local bike shops and test ride till you find something that suits your fancy and fits your budget.

ok thanks for the input guys. from personal use I actually prefer a road bike over a MTB, also since I am in the middle of suburbia it would take some traveling to be able to use a MTB for what it was made for.
I am also curious if anyone has been to Re-My Sport which is now Via Ciclante in Streetsville, I am curious if they are a good store. I know they have been around forever...

Bikes are very efficient which is to say you do not burn many calories using one. That said I suggest a folding bike (see forum) as it is easier to store and transport so you will likely use it more, and possibly use it for commuting.

As for storage I guess I could hang it on the wall or sleep with it in my bed...
