Well i got this today!

To sum it up... they want you to not buy gas for the hole day tomorrow... might as well try it... nothing to lose...

Don't BUY GAS on MAY 19, 2004

IT HAS BEEN CALCULATED THAT IF EVERYONE IN CANADA DID NOT PURCHASE A DROP OF GASOLINE FOR ONE DAY AND ALL AT THE SAME TIME, THE OIL COMPANIES WOULD CHOKE ON THEIR STOCKPILES.

AT THE SAME TIME IT WOULD HIT THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY WITH A NET LOSS OF OVER 4.6 BILLION DOLLARS WHICH AFFECTS THE BOTTOM LINES OF THE OIL COMPANIES.

THEREFORE MAY 19TH HAS BEEN FORMALLY DECLARED "STICK IT TO THEM" DAY AND THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION SHOULD NOT BUY A SINGLE DROP OF GASOLINE THAT DAY.

THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN BE DONE IS IF YOU FORWARD THIS E-MAIL TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN AND AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN TO GET THE WORD OUT.

WAITING ON THIS ADMIINSTRATION TO STEP IN AND CONTROL THE PRICES IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REDUCTION AND CONTROL IN PRICES THAT THE ARAB NATIONS PROMISED TWO WEEKS AGO?

REMEMBER ONE THING, NOT ONLY IS THE PRICE OF GASOLINE GOING UP BUT AT THE SAME TIME AIRLINES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES, TRUCKING COMPANIES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES WHICH EFFECTS PRICES ON EVERYTHING THAT IS SHIPPED. THINGS LIKE FOOD, CLOTHING, BUILDING MATERIALS, MEDICAL SUPPLIES ETC. WHO PAYS IN THE END? WE DO!

WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IF THEY DON'T GET THE MESSAGE AFTER ONE DAY, WE WILL DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN.

SO DO YOUR PART AND SPREAD THE WORD. FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW. MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND MAKE MAY 19TH A DAY THAT THE CITIZENS OF CANADA SAY "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH"

Don't BUY GAS on MAY 19, 2004

Looks like someone couldn't find the CAPS LOCK among other things. Tell me, what difference does it make if the fuel companies get your money today or tomorrow?

Doesn't seem to reconcile with their normal views on communism, does it?

Additionally, they should advocate that everyone ride a bike that day if they can! That would certainly bring home the point!

I missed this when I posted my first comment. The association of dairy farmers negotiated a raise in the floor price of milk recently. Feed and property costs have been rising steadily lately, plus milk is heavy, so it's expensive to truck around. No doubt fuel costs are contributing to the rise. The real shocker for me was the price of cheese. $3.50 for a little pack of Kraft singles?

If they need the extra, I don't mind paying, but to slap it on all at once? Nuh-uh, I ain't going for that one. My plan is to take calcium supplements and cut out ice cream and cheese unless it's on sale. If I need the protein, I'll look to eggs. I would have preferred it if they'd gradually increased the price so that the shock wouldn't have been so great, but damn! One day, milk was $1.79, and the next week, it was $3.59. That's just way out of my budget right now.

Definitely went up fast. Here it was only about $0.75 increase, and I know the increase in floor price wasn't that big, so there's obviously other factors involved, especially, apparently, in Chicago. The floor price definitely didn't double, and even if it did, that wouldn't translate to doubling the grocery store price since there's plenty of other costs involved. I think the price normally goes up a bit as summer approaches to offset the supply used for ice cream and American cheese. Hmmmm...hamburgers.

Why is gas (and it seems like everything else) less expensive than the national average in Florida?

I'm with you guys on the price of milk! I drink over a gallon a day. If I drive less than 30 miles a day, milk is more expensive than gas!

Here in west Tennessee, gas is still in the $1.80-$1.90 range. But that's high enough to cause some to change their commuting habits. My wife and her friend share rides to work on a regular basis and I use a motorcycle a lot more often. The area where I live is in general quite hostile to people on bicycles riding in the street. In fact, in this area there's a lot of hostility to anything that doesn't have a NRA bumper sticker, gun rack, 4wheel drive, or something that looks like what they used to drive on Dukes of Hazzard.

Totally correct. For all of the well meaning people out there. This will not do a thing to the oil companies.

The oil companies are NOT the gas stations. Not buying gas for one day may hurt the gas stations, but will not hurt the supplier a bit.

Plus, let's get real. What percentage of the population is even going to do this? .01, if that.

doh... i just found out today after i put in 7 gallons of 87 octane. it was $2.279 per gallon on a 87 octane. came out to be around $16.77, cuz gotta pick up my friend at SFO tonight.

on a lighter note.. some guy at 76Gas pump was putting gas into his camry. he put in about 17 gallons... price was $30.00. the funny part was.. he was cursing GW Bush as he pumped the gas. lol... that just made my day.

now.. i just need to get rid of this nasty mucus filling cough then i'll be strong enough to ride.... pray for me to get better.. thanks~

It's not GW. Gas is WAY cheaper in the rest of the country. Figure that out with all of the refineries right here in Long Beach. OHHHHHHHHH it's the HIGH CA state taxes.

Yes, and if those taxes were offset by something like... oh.... property taxes, I bet there'd be a lot more relief at the pumps...

In my town in Michigan's UP, it's $2.25 or so, but it's a really small town. To do some real shopping, we have to travel 60 miles where it went up from 1.99 to 2.03 today.

I was going to buy a truck last fall, but i'm glad I waited. I think I will stick with my ford escort for a while!

Won't even hurt the stations. If we assume a certain portion of the "gas-free for a day" people stock up the day before, and the rest load up the day after, I don't think the gas stations are going to be terribly worried. If anything, they'll look upon it as a blessing -- a day off. As I said in another thread, you want to do something about fuel prices? Sell the car and cycle to work. If not, quit whining.

the higher gas prices wont convert people to bikers... it will just make them complain more. personally, i dont think it'll cause an appreciable drop in drivers until it rises to 3$ or something.

my mom owns a shop and she gets tons of middle/upperclass soccer mom customers who are always *****ing about the gas prices. they say they must live 1 hour out in the hills away from the city where they work... but they also HAVE to drive an SUV because its "safer" ... and they ***** nonstop about spending 70$ on gas everyweek. jesus yuppie christ on a crutch.....

and Gas-Free Days... WHAT A JOKE!!! hahaha. These things have been planned so many times since I've been a license driver. I remember when people where doing them when gas avg a Buck and rose to 1.25$. IMO you shouldnt complain when our gas prices are DRASTICALLY lower than the rest of the worlds'.. herse the solution: sell your Ford fugging Expedition if all you do is drive to the local Albertsons and back

Do what I do, drive half way and ride the rest. I get in 27 miles a day doing it which is about 1 gallon of gas in my case = $2.00 a day. My work is also 25 miles away.

Not a bad idea. I will have to check out what is somewhere in between where it might be safe to leave my car for the day..

I come to the same conclusion. I have an alternative protest though. This is something that my wife and I did while saving for a down payment on a house as a money saving idea, but it would work equally well as a protest targeting gas stations.

Buy ONLY GAS at gas stations; No soda, snacks, oil, groceries, light bulbs, coffee, etc. There is nothing in that gas station (besides gas) that cannot be had somewhere else for a better price. Also these sundry items generate quite a bit of profit for the operator and are completely discretionary on your part. While you might be forced by circumstance to buy gas, you don't have to buy sundries.

Thanks for the site... I am surprized to see gas in NM is cheaper than it is here, when I left NM two and 1/2 years ago gas was about the same price as it is now...

But where can I buy my spicy processed beef and pork lips then? (fire-crackers as the packaging calls them)

As nasty the ingredient list, is, and how bad they reek...they are still tasty for some reason though...beats me.

From what I´ve heard the price of petrol in the US seems to have more to do with lack of refining capacity - that and having about 20 some different blends that can´t be moved to other states in case of shortage ...............

for the most part petrol is a by product that your leftwith after they take out the jet fuel / heating oil / truck fuel , now you can play with the percentages a bit but not that much .

ps why do you need SUV´s with almost 300 bhp when the limit´s 55 mph ? years ago my father had a Bristol that gave about 240 bhp ( 140 mph more or less ) and that was way more power than was needed even with a slush box .
anyway it´s going to cost you - ration by price or pay for more refinerys, your choice .

Reason why folks get SUVs with insane engines is the "HP = penis size" theory.

Guys want a 400HP Escalade to make themselves feel manly...Women just seem to get them based on either the safety myth (avoidance > crash mitigation) or the sheer comfort factor. There is of course the 2% who actually use them as an off-road vehicle...but those guys aren't the subject of my rants.

If a guy want s a balls out car....just go buy a freaking vette...or better yet...1996 Impala SS 350hp of land yacht lovin...and even it gets better fuel ecconomy than your average 350hp SUV....safer too. If you want safety, get a BMW or a Mustang. Don't forget the level 1 SCCA driving course, learning how to get the most out of your car is worth the $100 or so bucks the course costs. Mustangs are basically the poor man's bimmer...they are a bit less forgiving though (snap oversteer), so a race class is a good way to learn how to smoothly do rapid turns...plus the class is freaking easy, mostly just line and entry/exit technique (most of the driving is about 65-70mph and nothing very hard at all)....if they can't pass that, they should seriously reconsider driving at all.
