How was your first day with clipless?

I never fell with toe-clips and straps (no cleats) over 20years. In the first month of riding with SPDs, 10 years ago, I had a couple of falls when doing unplanned sudden stops. Now twisting the heel sideways is just part of taking my foot off the pedal, so dont think of unclipping before I stop.

I had a close call on Sunday, but didnt fall. At a complete stop, with my right foot unclipped. I went to take off and couldnt get it clipped back in, or pedal with my other foot....luckily I was able to get off.

After always using toeclips, shoe plates (cleats) and straps pulled tight, on fixed and gears, I thought that clipless were brilliant. I'd bought a bike with an old pair of Look pedals and had no problems. however, when I tried using the small (mtb?) double sided pedals I found that walking picked up enough dirt, sand etc., that I found clipping in and out temperamental - and fell off twice! I've since bought a pair of Keo (Look) pedals to replace them. I'm not sure what the smaller pedals are called? I thought they were spd but doesn't that describe all Shimano pedals? I bought these because I figured I may be walking up some hills - I was right! What clipless pedal preference do others have, I'm curious to know?

On my first day of using SPDs I had two falls, both due to not remembering to click out and stopping. Then in the course of the next two years I had a couple of near falls where the bike wanted to lean over to the inconvenient side!
I gave up on SPDs and started using platforms like the way I used to before. I don't miss them at all and my SPD sandals are gathering dust. Thankfully I do century rides with my overweight & slow roadie friends so keeping up is not a problem (lets hope they don't browse this thread)!

The first day I ever rode clipless I did ok with my test ride on my neighborhood streets. The next day, after adjusting them too tightly (they were SPDs) I rode to a busy intersection and couldn't unclip. Luckily I was on an incline, so I managed to do an impromptu freewheel trackstand until I managed to get one foot free. After that I made checking the pedals part of my pre-ride routine, and haven't had any problems since.
