This was not an acceptable solution. They wanted to exchange locks that cost HALF of what I paid for my Street Cuffs. If they would have acknowledged the fact that a BiC pen could open their locks as a defect and said simply that they had a product in development and I could exchange my locks when it was rolled out I would have been much happier. I'm not about to let them trade a lesser, unguaranteed product for one of their flagship models. Ain't gonna happen.

Which lock is more valuable to you now? Keep the cuffs or trade for flat key U locks. You knew you weren't getting a kryptonite when you bought those goofy hand cuffs. You can still use them in the bedroom.

You're missing the point entirely.

Well I see they are willing to stand behind their product
I dont see a problem
and in that demo who knows what was done to the bic pin before hand to make it work
I have seen several post where people have tried it and I dont think I have seen one say it worked

how do you all know it wasnt a crook that made that demo to get people to quit useing those type locks
that type key has been used for years on a lot of stuff including pop machines
and you dont hear about then bein picked just the whole thing broken in to

Your thing is you want your bikes to be securited right and want a garrenty that if they are stolen while you had them locked up they would be replaced
they said they will do that

remember "Locks are made to keep honest people honest not stop theifs, just slow them down"

if a multi Million dollar vault cant stop a theif how do you excpect a $50 lock to

Tech did you even READ the Ulock thread? There are PLENTY of people who have been here for YEARS who have gotten this to work. I could cash in on the guarantee anytime I wanted - but that would be construed as fraud - not something I'm willing to do.
Let's phrase this a different way. Say you bought a deadbolt lock to protect your home and valuables. You're concerned with quality and security so you buy the top of the line lock. Later it's shown that this lock can be picked with a toothpick and a wad of bubble gum - wouldn't YOU want an explanation? Wouldn't YOU demand to know what the company is going to do to correct the problem?

I'm with you; after years of buying cheap bikes and cheap locks, I finaly go for some quality and find out a $50-60 lock is as easily dispatched as something for $14.99. I wonder if Masterlock gets enough emails of complaint, they'll start dealing with this issue the way Kryptonite has.

I know because I did it as well, and have opened more in the past week getting my LBS to understand it. BTW read the thread a bit better, a good few said it worked.

Plus I call foul on your vault comment....are you saying you can pick a vault with a bic pen....no...are you saying the vault can be lockpicked....prolly not. Bottom line is it CANNOT be picked with a damn pen. Stop thinking hollywood here, this is real, so use a real comparison.

Vending machines...same lock type, it was posted merely to show how prevalent these lock types are, possibly to slow the roll of some of these "lynch krypto" folks...

and I agree with your quote of a locks prupose...however in this case, we were shown that this lock is inferior to a $6 wal-mart cable lock. When a lock is beat out by a lock that is considered to be noting compared to it, something is very very amiss.

anyways, why make such a general flame in an off-thread?

Good response! I've heard stories of college students reporting computer vulnerabilities and getting the same type of crap.

By the way, I noticed a bike on campus chained up with a set of street cuffs, so I took a close look. Although I wasn't going to test it on someone else's lock, the barrel of the lock looked too big to stretch the barrel of a pen over.

Yeah at that point I was getting sick of the blindly arrogant crap they were spewing.

I'd like to get a video of the Street Cuffs getting hacked so I can direct people to it.

Maybe all of their bikes are locked up. We should steal their bikes and leave the locks with bic pens jammed in em. What buttholes they are.

Just to let people know ... Today I called Masterlock (Canada) and they were very polite but said that they will not do anything to help out customers who have purchased their now useless locks. That this is their policy. So unlike Raiyn, I didn't even get an offer to exchange my tubular key U-lock for one using flat keys. I'm thinking people should either flood masterlock with emails of compalint, or else boycott them.

Just boycott them, they werent all that good to begin with. Their street cuffs were at least innovative, but most of their products were rather vanilla, and had nothing going for it other than a name.

The cuffs were always a novelty item, secure in their day but inherently more difficult to use than mini U lock. I already was boycotting Masterlock. They have nothing to lose in bicycle lock market share. People sending kids to camp will buy flimsy masterlock padlock for the footlocker. They will continue to be a provider of low security locks.

true, I was always more fond of going and buying a dollar store padlock over master though. if it only needed a meiocre lock, then why spend much money over it?

yes I read part of it like I said I didnt notice any one saying they got it to work
you say they did that was on the Krypto ok fine did any one try it on a Master ?

my point was that Master is willing to stand behind their lock

if I bought a lock that I later found out wasnt as good as it claims then I would go out and buy something else.

and I'm sorry but the American people have proved they will buy faulty products
how many of ya own a computers with Windows on it?

catatonic
the valut comment was intended to make a point that a $50 lock wasnt goin to stop a theif if they really want your bike / it may slow them down , granted the bic pin makes it easyer for them if they can get it to work
and the Vending machines comment was intended to show how many and long these type lock been around

and I didnt intend to flame anyone

like I sais I didnt know if it worked or not
nor did I know who posted the thing to begin with

Heres a Question
Has anyone ever lost a bike locked with this type lock that was opened by a bic pen
or cant explain how the lock was opened

You guys can all put together your own locking method by using Abus Diskus pad locks with the Abus series of chains or cables. Most locksmiths carry these. Ask them why they carry Abus locks.

Guys, stop the ranting for a sec and let's get the main issue confirmed:

Does anyone have first hand knowledge of the Street Cuffs being compromised by a BIC? Any videos of such?

I opened my cuffs in about 30 seconds. I used the pen cap and a little tap from a hammer to get it into the cylinder. Then it was as easy as all the other ones that have video.

I'm sorry but this post is about the dumbest piece of drivel I have ever read. Thiefs breaking into vaults have special tools, years of experience, tons of time and carefully orchestrated plans. NOT A BIC PEN!!! I have personally (along with a few hundred others, as posted on the threads... which apparently you didn't actually read), opened the Masterlock cuffs we have at work, and have a few friends who were able to open their Kryptos when I told them about this. Maybe you missed the 100 posts of those who got it to work (several long time board members included), or the 4 videos, or the articles in New York Times, or Kryptonite acknowledging that yes, it is a problem, or the fact that this came up as early as 1992... but yes, clearly, you are right. This is some carefully orchestrated plan to get us to switch to a flat key lock so the thieves can have a field day on our bikes.

Bottom line, Masterlock is giving him the shaft by offering him some very inexpensive locks with no guarantee in trade for his rather expensive lock that came with a guarantee.

sorry if I went a bit hard on you techJD, I was in a bit of a mood, and for some reason that post came off as a flame.

yeah, we all know nothing is thief-proof, it's just expecting a certain amount of protection and not having it that got us all upset. I was one of those kids that played around with locks, mostly since I had way too much free time on my hands..so I am well aware of how a lock only slows someone down. A guy with a cordless grinder is going to have whatever bike he wants, nuff said....but its jsut a matter of scale to me. plastic defeating steel is just a bit absurd to say the least
