That would be believable if your motorcycle were an Hayabusa, ZX12R, or at very least one of the latest liter-engined sportbikes, AND it were 275Kph, not mph. If you are not riding an Hayabusa, ZX12R or at very least one of the latest liter-engined sportbikes, I'm afraid your VMax is in error.

The speed apps on Android phones are GPS based and extremely accurate - when there is a solid lock on 3 or more satellites. There are a lot of factors that could have caused a calculation error. Poor satellite reception or poor application programming are the two likely suspects. I've seen apps that erroneously display speed 2x of what the phone is actually moving momentarily. Poor error correction/detection in an Android app is fairly common.

Regardless, he didn't hit 50mph.

To those of us non-professional riders, 50 mph on the flat is just not achievable. I'd nod politely the next time he tells that story, but make sure you take him out and show him what a cyclist is.

When I chase cars at intersections, I keep up with them to about 28 mph and then the lactic acid reminds me I'm mortal.

I have heard of people hitting over 50 on a bike but that has always been on descents. I have never heard anyone even claim to hit 50 mph on the flats.

I suspect that there was a glitch on the equipment and your brother and law bought it at face value.

Of course, his speed is nothing. I once "averaged" 115 mph on a club ride which was going at a "C" pace. Now who wouldn't believe that? I rather suspected that there was something fishy going on with my bike computer.
I'm pretty sure I could hit 50 on flat ground. But that is becasue I know some places where hiting double digit speeds into the wind is major work. If I really really wanted a meaningless bragging number I could find the right conditions to get it.

I used an app on my droid not sure if its the same one this morning just to see how accurate it was. And the final result:it sucks big time. According to my phone my average speed was 21.6MPH with a top speed of of 38.1MPH, and the numbers from my cycleputer is an average speed of 14.1MPH with a top speed of 29.7MPH. Just a slight difference there

No way. In the flying 200m on the track, record olders get in the 46-49 mph range for a second or two. A sprinter that is led out will probably be in the same range. If he is hitting 50 mph, he should be a pro.

On the track the riders are using a gear in the 90-95 inch range.
