I used to enjoy riding the Delaware and Raritan Canal when I lived in NJ. Not a lot of traffic on the trail, but in very good condition. Good eating along the way too.

I love the Arkansas rivertrail system. It has many options for all riding skills and distances from flat to hills short loops to 50 milers. Running along the Arkansas river it is also very scenic. It travels between 2 state and 2 city parks and supplements many city bike routes also. Never the same ride twice unless you want it to be.

Another vote for the Madison County Illinois System. But I do like the Katy because of the remote parts.

Ditto. I did 40 miles on the MadCo trails yesterday, but really looking forward to my 5-day trip on the Katy in June.

I live near the Black Hills of South Dakota where the Mickelson Trail goes from Deadwood to Edgemont. Total of 114 miles with three tunnels, a short leg to Lead and one to Custer State Park.
The only place I use my mtn bikes, have ridden total length twice. Scenery is great, inclines are long, up to seven miles. That means declines are also long.
I have met many tourists that came just to ride this trail. Met a couple guys last year from Trek.
There are a couple organized rides every year, if you are near check it out.

Here in Louisiana we have the Tammany Trace, a Rails-to-Trails dedicated bike path through the woods and suburbs. Former train tracks converted to a recreational path.

It's about 30 miles long from the Covington trailhead to Slidell, and there are only a few road crossings. Very scenic and relaxed -- because you're not constantly dodging cars. And there are almost never any horses, although technically they're allowed on some portions.

There's no other dedicated bike path like it in the state.

I have to admit though, the Trace is nothing compared to Colorado. And not just for biking -- hiking, skiing, everything outdoors. Damn, I wish I lived there!

^ this. I agree with Jim. There is a network of excellent trails around DC and northern VA, but they're uninspiring for the most part. The better riding is on the roads.

Up around Thurmont, MD and Camp David. Out in Middleburg, VA. Along the Shenandoah, up in Harper's Ferry. Looping around Purcelville, Waterford, Hamilton and Lincoln. These are all quite a bit nicer than any of the trails.

...around here, on the lower end of Vancouver Island, we have been blessed by the disappearance of two railroads and these have both been turned into rail trails, we also have old interurban lines that were long ago made into a combination of rural roads or trails. The combination is called the Galloping Goose regional trail and the Lochside Regional Trail, we also have the current railroad line that is seldom used and has a bike path built along side it, this is called the E&N Rail Trail. Put together they provide over 90 miles of amazing bike trails that are utilized by many commuters and fitness riders as well as families just out for the fun of it...

We are blessed with a plethora of urban/suburban/country trail around here, mostly paved, the rest aglime which packs like concrete. Of all of them, I like the Fox River trail system the best. Basically runs from Crystal Lake to Oswego, about 50 miles. Many places, different trails on different sides of the river. You can link to almost the entire Kane County trail system from this one trail, which links and covers the entire Chicago area. Hundreds and hundreds of miles......................

The Kane County Trail System, and some neighboring trail systems are available on line thru an easy to download road map of Kane County, Illinois.

The best part of all this, is the River Trail is less than 1 mile from my house, thru residential neighborhoods.
