Stolen Bike Databases - Using the Interweb to our advantage
We all know bike thieves suck! There have been a couple of databases created to aid in the tracking down of stolen bikes. You can even tweet to isitstolen with a serial number to check and see if it has been reported as stolen to one of the lower databases.
StolenBicycleRegistry just merged with BikeIndex.org! ☺
a.k.a: Bike thieves, life just got *way* more difficult

And this org just submitted a petition to have craigslist and EBay require serial numbers on bicycle sales.

Disclaimer: I in no way work for either organisation. I just think bike thieves should be hanged!
