I ride a 7.4 and was wondering what the widest tire people have tried with the stock rims. When I purchased the bike we rode all paved roads or trails. Since then we have moved and now all the trails around us are unpaved gravel. I would like some tires that are a little less squirly on the hard pack surface we ride on.

I just went out in the garage and looked at my 7.9 FX which has 700x35 tires, and there is LOTS of extra space between the tires and frame/fork. I'm pretty sure could easily fit a 700x50 tire with no problem. The fact that our bikes have v-brakes is also huge, as they allow large tires (I have a Giant Rapid 0, and it has caliper brakes, and won't allow much bigger than the 700x28 tires that are on it, unless I wanted to deal with the hassle of deflating my tires to take my wheels on or off (and the front is taken off when I load the bike in the back of my car).
Maybe look into some of the semi-knobby cyclocross tires in 700x38 or so?

I realize your bikes are quite different and am curious what you like about each bike and what determines which bike you will ride that day.QUOTE=RedRockRider;18536915]I don't think the rims are the limiting factor, it is the frame (unless you are trying to put mountain bike tires on, lol).

Yes, I am interested in how those 2 bikes compare and do you have specific uses for the bikes such as one for riding with a group, one for long rides or one for fitness and one for fun or do you just like to change it up once in awhile. Also, what year is your Trek FX 7.9. I know they have changed quite a bit over the years. I know of a used 7.9 available, that's why I ask. Thanks

I think my 7.9 is a 2011. I picked up the frame a couple of years ago, brand new, from an ebay bike power seller. The listing claimed it was a "warehouse find". I think I paid just under $500 shipped, for the brand new frame and fork. I pieced together a Shimano 105 crankset, Ultegra derailleurs, and I had a set of Tiagra flat bar shifters and brakes from another bike that I sold the frame for. The wheels were a bit of a challenge as the FX frame has 135mm dropouts, but eventually scored a like new set of wheels off of ebay for a great price. Will eventually do a thread with photos.
As far as the comparison, my 2010 Giant Rapid 0 (purchased used in great condition off of Craigslist for $600) is actually much more of what I would call a "flat bar road bike" versus the Trek, which is less sporty, more hybrid. The Giant weighs in a couple of pounds lighter (partly because of the heavier wheel set on the Trek), and is a slightly more aggressive position. I keep narrower 28mm tires on it. The Trek wears 35mm.
I enjoy both of them, but I do tend to grab the Giant when riding with others, as it is a bit faster on the same course. The Trek is really a beautiful bike, a bit more comfortable, but still a quick ride. Both bikes are good for my typical ride of 25-35 miles (just did 29 miles this morning on the Giant).
How much are they asking for the 7.9 you are looking at? I don't see them listed often on ebay or craigslist, and are usually quite expensive.

RedRockRider, I believe they were asking $1250. It has been taken down now but was up for a couple of months. I'm in MN so it could be in storage till spring. It was about a 3 hour drive and I didn't get a chance to see it. The owner told me the model that he had would not take the 35 tires which I prefer. I kick myself a little for not going up to see it but I wasn't sure I could justify it as I just picked up a used 7.5 last summer. It sounds like your 7.9 is a beauty. Congratulations on the nice job building it.

Standover Question
Hi everyone, on the Trek website the standover for the Fx 7.4 WSD 17.5 " is listed as 63.0. The standover for the the 15" WSD frame is 69.7 This doesn't seem possible to me. Can anyone clear this up? Thanks.

Standover on these bikes can be a bit subjective, based on where on the top bar they are measuring to the ground, because the top is VERY sloped, especially on the smaller frames.
I wouldn't be surprised if the measurements for those frames on Trek's website were made from different locations on the top bar.

I originally owned an old Miele Power Cross Mountain Bike that was big, heavy, and full of suspension (at least 15 years old). I rode very occasionally, and after years of maintenance neglect it still functioned great....up until I had it on a roof rack and cleared it off the top of my SUV pulling into a hotel with a car port after an exhausting 16hr drive. HA! Nonetheless, I was now in the market for a new bike.
Well, I am the proud new owner of a 2015 Trek 7.2 fx (Black). I was a bit torn between spending the extra money on a DS with front suspension for some trail rides ... but reading up I think it will be sufficient for most trails I have around town. The vast majority of my riding will be paved trails anyways. I picked it up used in literally MINT condition for $450 CAD. I think it was a decent deal.
I plan on picking up a helmet, Upstand bike stand, water bottle cage, fenders, rear rack, rear panniers, a seat post bag, and it already came with a cat eye super mini bell to keep me legal. I'll be looking at Kryptonite U-Lock's with the cable as well.
I plan on riding often through out the spring summer and fall, and I am looking forward to going from 0 to 50km in a race this coming fall. A friend of mine casually rides and thinks this is achievable for someone who has never really been a distance rider. I am in decent shape, and can run a 10k around 45 mins, so I am hoping this will translate into my riding.
I am hoping to take some maintenance courses so I can keep this bike in excellent condition for many years to come.

There may be a lot of clearance around the frame/fork, but did you take a close look at the frame
clearance in the front of the chainstays ????

For one who hasn't done much cycling in the past:
Will I get used to the 2015 7.2FX saddle or should I be looking at replacing it. It is relatively uncomfortable as far as I can tell -- mind you, I have not tried out a number of different saddles. Are their "break in" periods for saddles, or are stock saddles typically uncomfortable?

I won a pair of Brooks Ergon GP1 grips and went to put them on my FX 7.5 (I believe a 2011). I eventually got the originals off, but realized I was in trouble when the new grips slid on with almost no resistance. These have a screw on the end, but there was no difference with that fully tightened. The grips spin fairly easily so I know they'd move while riding.
Does anyone have any good suggestions? I know of the hairspray trick but wanted to make sure there wasn't anything else to try first (do the brake levers need to be moved inward? etc).

Yeah, I really think I'll like them. Funny thing is when I got the first package, I realized both were left grips, so they had to send me a right, from Italy. Now I just need another right and I've got another set

Hi everyone! New to the forum but seriously interested in biking. My previous bike got stolen, and I'm now in the market for something good since I learned that I love biking. I bike to work, and around on paved trails, hoping to work up to longer distances. I was wondering how the Trek 7.2 FX WSD compares to a 2009 Trek Allant? I love the look of the Allant, but the Trek 7.2 is on sale at my LBS whereas there's a used Allant up a state or two away. I like that the Allant already has fenders. Thoughts? Thank you!

Take a look at the Serfas line of seats. Lots of choices.
I replaced the original seats on both of my bikes.
It was well worth it.

I have a Trek FX 7.3 WSD (non-stagger), 2015 in black with purple accents. It's my first bike since childhood so I'm basically re-learning how to ride, and loving it.
