The big truck arrived early today! These are additional 7000 series 105 parts to match the crank and new brake pads. I'll save the old 105 derailluers for my wife's bike when I figure out a 2x setup for it.

New derailleurs installed but waiting to install the cable and do adjustments over the weekend. The rear unit is definitely more low profile and does not stick out as far when I look down the side of the bike. Front derailleur is design different but not as noticeable when compared to the original.

Installed new brake pads and reinstalled the wheels last night. Used the tire wedges to compress the calipers before pad install. After messing with front derailleur cable, I decided to replace it to make life easier. New cable and cable lube secured at the LBS today and lost masterlink for the chain found.

Finally made time to finish up the derailleur installs yesterday. I took my time, double checked my work, and all is well. After getting everything adjusted, I am wondering if my chain is too long. I used a medium rear derailleur like the old one but the design moves differently and the chain sags when on the small front/small rear combo. I'll add more pics later today to show the chain. Until then, I present the Quick 1 with full 105 drivetrain.

Life keeps happening and the bike is still out of commission. I ordered this lovely and used a REI Member 20% off coupon to save a few bucks. It'll be here this week.

Finally made some time for the bike. Why did I wait so long to buy the Park Tools master link tool?!?!? I got the chain rerouted in the rear derailuer. Time to fine tune the front deraileur and bleed the brakes before hitting the trail. We had sunny and 60 in central Ohio - the trails are calling me.

I find the current model year Quick 1's steering twitchy .
I thought their OutFront geometry with 55mm fork offset was supposed to add stability . Would going from 32mm to 35mm tires help ? |

I have also observed that bars are too wide for me make the bike feel twitchy/unstable. As you can see with the bar upgrade pics, I cut them down a fair amount to match bars original bars. That being said, I bought this bike from a friend who told me they cut the original bars down to fit her. It was also a two step process - make the first cut for less than expected, take it for a ride, and then make the second cut if necessary.

Spent some time with the bike yesterday. Front deraileur is finally adjusted but now I'm thinking the chain is too long. When it is on the small front ring and smaller rear rings the rear deraileur pulls back parallel to the ground and the chain is very loose. I can see the R7000 deraileur appears and moves differnet than the R5700 unit but I have been hesitant to break the chain and remove several links. What's the worst case scenario? I need to buy another chain...

Yeah, that's way too long. I like to have the cage at 45 degrees in big/big; just enough chain to wrap the biggest combo. You will notice snappier shifting as well.

Finally was able to shorten the chain this weekend. I removed 4 links and things are better but in hindsight, I think 2 would have done it. I'll finish the setup and give it a ride tonight if I am lucky.

Took the Quick out for a short ride around the neighborhood tonight. Beside needing to bleed the brakes and derailluers fine tuning, I love the changes to the bike. The 165mm 105 crank paired with the BBInfinite bottom bracket is light, fast, and easy to pedal. My cadence is more natural and it is easier to spin faster. I hope to hit the trails over the weekend to get the full feel for the upgrades.

Made time to bleed the brakes yesterday since they were really soft. Freshly bled brakes and new pads (even if they are the original Shimano replacements) offer a memorable stopping experience.
My daughter asked for a late morning ride so we grabbed 6 miles together. Late this afternoon, I managed to sneek out for another 9 miles alone. One thing for sure, the crank swap and BB upgrade makes a higher cadence much easier and more comfortable for me. Now I am noticing the jumps in the current cassette. Hmmm... |
Long needed update and new plan of attach.
After a few miles on the trail and multiple attempts but no luck getting the rear derailleur right, I took some pics of the cassette and shared them with friends who helped me get into this bike. The word hooking was mentioned and I muttered under my breath that I should have just replaced the cassette and chain when I did the derailleur upgrades. I ordered a new cassette (same as the current one) and a 105 chain. I need to pick up the tools to replace the cassette and then it will go back together. Look back to 2 summers ago when I replaced the chain - there was significant stretch but I didn't consider wear/damage to the cassette at that time. Lessons learned for sure.
