Went here and found that the sand nearer the sea was hard enough to ride across. Did so for about 5km until I got to the next beach village.

Mine had to sit all alone in the dark in the bike barn. it was raining off and on today, and I had too much deskwork, never got out for a ride :(

its probably dreaming of sunday's ride.

What bike is that? I am digging the curvey frame. I mean it's probably suboptimal from an engineering point of view but who cares it looks sweet :)

Its a 2010 Globe Vienna 02.

Globe is a off brand for Specialized. more or less, its a budget version of the Sirrus, with minimalist decals. I've changed the bars, pedals, cassette, and added fenders, lights, etc.

Today I rode 16 miles to Manhattan and back via the 59th Street Bridge.

Money changer for Euro dollars, Nintendo World in Rockefeller Center to get my German cousin and a friends son some exclusive Nintendo New York tshirts and mugs, then I met a friend near Bryant Park for a Cafe au Lait before hauling my carcass back over the 59th street bridge.

I could have used the safer Triboro bridge route but every once and awhile I force myself to ride through the busiest Manhattan traffic so that I stay sharp.

I started cycling as a commuter and I credit Manhattan rush hour for making me a safer cyclist.

In the 2+ years/5k city miles I have rode I have seen the population of cyclist rise steadily.

While I am happy to share the road, it saddens me to see so many without helmets or lights.

I've wondered about those curvy frames.

Definitely a distinctive aesthetic if nothing else.

see, I also use this as my 'festival bike' (I go to a multiday music festival twice a year, where bicycles are the primary transportation), and my original fest bike was this light weight cruiser I'd built up back in the late 70s...

so my hybrid has replaced that, and I liked the cruiser 'style' even tho the flat bars are way off. 700x35's are nearly as good on dirt as 26x1.75's...

If I really had my way, I'd be painting this hybrid strawberry red like I did that old cruiser. hah!

Nice 20 mile ride this afternoon with a mixture of pavement and dirt roads with temps around 50 degrees. Once on the country dirt roads I was free of traffic which made for a nice peaceful ride.

I changed out the OEM Bontrager LT3 700 x 38c tires to the Continental Travel Contact 700 x 37c a few days ago, and this was my first ride on them. The Continentals on the hard surface seemed a little faster, definitely quieter. On the back country dirt/gravel roads, which I travel often, the tires didn't give me any trouble.

Thanks for the info on the Continentals ....was looking at them today and thought they would be ok....Just started looking at larger tires for my Kona Dr. Fine.

Just a heads up..., I found on my Travel Contact 700 x 37c they actually measure out at 33mm wide @ 80 psi..., which is just fine for me. Don't know if the other sizes run a little smaller in width or not.

I sure thank you for that info...I wanting at least 35 to 40.

Nice cruiser. I like the forward facing drink holder and the choice of pedals.

Cruising around a festival sounds like a lot of fun. I'm a huge fan of a lot of music out of California. It was great for me to see Primus 5 times in New York in the last 15 months. A rare treat for a long time fan.

That bike really reminds me of the bikes we use in Ocean Beach Fire Island.

Out there only year round residents have cars, but the distances you normally travel are perfect for bikes.

I taught myself to ride a bike there, rolling down from the entrance to the beach and pedaling to the bay.

We sold our little house there years ago.... and now the whole place is destroyed by hurricane Sandy.

Sheesh... New York and New Orleans used to only share a musical heritage.

Now they are both synonymous with disaster.

how wide are your rims? wider/narrower rims have a definite impact on the overall width of a given size tire.

the pedals on that bike are late 70s KKT Lightning old school BMX pedals, in blue anodized. The cranks are some ancient SR's in red anodize (faded to pink). once upon a time, the bike frame was white, and all the parts on it where red, blue and gold. even the rims were red anodized.. the frame originally had an ashtabula one piece steel crank in it, but I installed a standard square shaft BB when I built the bike from junk back in the late 70s. The weak spot of the bike is that the seat post is 9/16ths inch, and the seat tube is too darn skinny such that my overweight butt cracked the weld where the upper part of the seat tube comes through the bent top tube. thats been MIG welded by my neighbor the retired master boilermaker, but I can't find ANY seat posts in 9/16ths anymore other than crappy steel Wald ones that bend too easily, so now the bike is my daughter's festival bike and I'm on my new hybrid.

re: festivals, that picture is taken at the Strawberry Music Festival, which is held up in the Sierra near Yosemite each Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend. great fun. mostly acoustic/folk music, with a bit of blues and such thrown in.

hah, re Primus, I took my then-teenage son to see Primus at the local Civic a few years back, he was a hard core fan. This was the Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People tour. Great fun. :lol:

That was a great tour. You're a super cool dad to take him there.

My first Primus show was the Pork Soda tour, I was still in High School at the time and went alone to the Roseland Ballroom!

I couldn't find the specs on my Bontrager AT-650 32 hole disc rims, but the outside edge of the rim measures 25.25mm wide.

My original OEM BT 700 x 38c tires did measure 38mm wide on the same rim.

I thought I read somewhere that the Continentals run a little narrower then specified (could be wrong).

I wouldn't be surprised if I end up drinking and riding in Germany. Come to think of it. Sounds damn near unavoidable.

The forecast calls for rain in Amsterdam, which may effect how much video I shoot there. If I use the GoPro waterproof case, the audio will suffer.

I would like to do a bike tour. But I don't want to do a conventional tour..... I was thinking of trying to hire a bike shop employee or get a recommendation for a tour guide who would take me on a 30 or 40 mile moderately paced tour to all the places a local would ride (I see an interesting bridge on the map).

the contis I've seen (mostly Gatorskins) have very thin flexible sidewalls, that alone could account for about 2mm difference, as many of the stock tires on our hybrids, like my Nimbus 35c, are quite thick and clunky.
