This may be areally dumb question, but here goes. I just got the above mentioned computer for my bike. The question is, how far down the front fork do I attach the part that reads the magnet. I know that this piece and the magnet need to be aligned, but I am not sure how far down the fork and spoke they should be.

Sorry if I am ignorant, but this is my first computer.

It really does not matter how far down it is except that you need it to be close enough to the magnet to pick up the signal.
Usually a gap of 5mm or less (read the manual).
The farther down the fork the closer the spokes will be to the pickup unit.

Thanks Laserman. That sounds good. I didn't know if it would read different if they were lower down on the spoke and fork because the radius would be shorter. I was never very good at phsyics. HAHAHA.

No it will read the same. It really just counts how many times the magnet passes the sensor to keep track of distance. The time interval between passes is used to calculate the speed. No matter where you put the sensor and magnet the magnet will only pass the sensor once per revolution so the distance and speed will read the same no matter where it is. To get the speed and distance accurately you do need to tell the computer the circumference of your inflated tire because it is the circumference that determines the distance traveled per revolution. I don't know that any do this but some computers could ask for the tire diameter or radius instead of the circumference since it is easy to calculate the other two from any one of the three so follow the directions that come with your computer when asked to enter the wheel size value.

Thank you. The one thing I did different than the picture (let me know if I am wrong) was that I have the sensor on the inside of my fork instead of the outside. It seems like I couldn't get it within 5MM having it on the outside even though it looks like that's how it is attached on the picture.

Should be fine as long as its secure and it reads ...As I've always said when looking at instructions ...That is "their way" to do it....
