What to look for in pedals?

I got the new bike (diamondback edgewood LX) and it comes with some crappy plastic pedals that I can forsee myself slipping off of when going uphill on. any suggestions on pedals that are reasonably priced and black?

Black will wear off and look scrappy. The thing to look for in pedals are the words MKS. Cheap, reliable, durable and practical. I use the Sylvian touring model

Thanks for about the Sylvian pedals. I like the looks of those. I have one bike with platform/clipless combo pedals that I like, but my other bike is in need of better pedals.

Bikes: Serotta Davis Phinney, 1992 Serotta T Max,1984 Specialized Allez, Olmo, 1974 Strawberry,Redline bmx, ect.,

Redline bmx pedals in alloy for $20 or with bigger pins for $25 hold up real well.
