Trek 7000
Hey guys, newbie here, just purchased a use Trek 7000 and was wondering what I could do about making it lighter? or possibly if it's worth adding front suspension, I'm in NYC.

Well, if you add a front suspension, it will make the bike even heavier.
And as for making the bike lighter, you will have to spend mucho to get it appreciably lighter, because everything on the Trek 7000 is heavy.
- The handlebar and fork are all steel.
- The wheelset is heavy.
- The seatpost is heavy because it has a suspension spring.
- The drivetrain is low-end and use pretty heavy cranks.
- The frame is heavy, and there is nothing you can do about the frame.
The amount of money you would have to spend to lighten that puppy would be almost as much as buying a lighter bike.

It's generally very expensive to lighten bikes by replacing parts. Since you bought it used it would be more cost effective to sell it and buy something lighter like the 7.1 or 7.2 FX or the 7100 or 7300 if you want front suspension. But before you do all of that why not ride it and see if you like the bike? I own a carbon fiber road bike and I'm thinking about picking up a 7000 series Trek as a second bike.

It would be a lot cheaper to buy another bike than to upgrade a 7000. I've got a 7100 and I used it as a way of getting back into cycling. My one concession to upgrading was to put on some clipless pedals and a bike computer. My main ride now is a carbon fiber road bike but I still use the 7100 for going to the store etc.

i love my 7000. heavier than some maybe but i ride it alot and its tough as nail. For kicks i took it on a trail, actually made it about 2.5 miles....didnt hit the ground much more then the folks with mountain bikes either. It took a whole lot of abuse and needed some cable tightening when it was over. It does great at the park, to and from the gym or people's houses, but can still do a creekside path or grassy area with no problem, or even light sand. The trail stuff has me watching for an inexpensive used mountain bike at a yard sale or something...lol what a blast

I have the women's version of the 7000. It's a 2010 model and I love it! I replaced the heavy, power-robbing suspension seatpost with a normal one yesterday. Today I took it on some local hills. What a difference! The bike used to feel sluggish on climbs. Now it climbs better and I don't have to get out of the saddle as much.
When I bought the bike I took off the dork disk and chainguard and added toe clips and bar ends. Recently I lowered the adjustable stem as far as it would go because I was sitting too upright before. That also helped, especially in today's sufferfest headwind. I also replaced the heavy, uncomfortable gel saddle with a Serfas Terazzo Select women's saddle.
