Bikes: 2013 Obnoxiously Heavy Fixed Gear

Hello from the Republic of California!

Hello all! You can call me Jeremy (or Khánh). My true home is Cupertino, California, but I now hail from the land of Redwoods, granola, green smoke, and hostage freeways: the little city of Santa Cruz.

My lifelong like for biking flourished into a passion at the beginning of high school, when my best friend "donated" his unwieldy, hi-ten steel Pure Fix(TM) to me for a measly $60. Over the years, I've swapped its stock components out for lighter, faster, and sexier ones that, nevertheless, remain at odds with the frameset: a dingy white behemoth weighing just a few pounds shy of a
Panzerkampfwagen Tiger Ausf. B. In all seriousness (and despite the amount of crap I give my bike), I love the thing dearly and will doubtlessly continue to ride it even after buying a new bike.

This forum has been a fantastic source of information for me throughout the years, so I figured that I should finally try to give back to the community and make an account--and here we are!

In the coming years, I hope to get more deeply involved in crits, track cycling, framebuilding, and real long-distance cycling--think of those crazy buggers who bike from Quebec to Antarctica (boy, I really should take a geography class next quarter).

When not doing things on my bike that give other fixed-gear riders a bad name, you can find me skiing, composing music, swimming, playing rugby, volunteering, using the telescope, practicing the marimba and trombone, hiking, and writing.

Thanks for being a great community, and I can't wait to get more involved in it!

Hello and welcome from another NorCal member! You sound so very down to earth and VERY Santa Cruzy. Are you sure you're from Cupertino? LOL

Glad that you have joined and I hope that you are able to share more of your wonderful personality with us.

Let's just say I didn't have to acclimate to the culture too much

Thank you so much for the welcome, and I really appreciate the compliment!

There's really something for everyone here, it's absolutely incredible. Though fixed gear riders from flatter areas may have some trouble here!

Fixed gear riders need to learn to master Zayante, Empire Grade, Mt Charlie, and Alba roads - builds character both directions. I loved the mountain roads for quiet and solitude. And Hwy 1 north toward Davenport & Half Moon Bay.
