in the last 5 years I started wearing wool.
in particular I've been wearing 1 Defeet base layer shirt, or 1 Smartwool base layer shirt. just in the last few months the Smartwool shirt has started to tear. the DeFeet shirt is slightly heavier and is wearing much longer.
I like high quality outdoor/hiking type clothing, but I seldom buy it in stores. Over the years I have built up a nice collection from thrift store and yard sale finds, for a dollar or two each.

Recent finds are a very nice heavy Patagonia Capilene top, like new, for $1 at a gear swap.
I had been wanting some merino wool tops and finally bought a couple last year from campmor, on sale. A Smartwool one and another of some other brand. I wore them all winter.
At a yard sale this summer I found an Icebreaker heavy merino wool top for $3. Can't wait for winter again!

Or any bedding, like a sleeping bag, a blanket or pad. And he must eat all his meals in restaurants.

So how many things did Ford Prefect have? Less than 15 I imagine.

According to the web page, he doesn't include his underwear in his count.

I guess it doesn't matter if he counts his underwear. At least he has some. And probably same for a sleeping bag (unless he rents his bedding....).

Nothing wrong with being a minimalist.

I always think we'll someday feature someone who has a ton of crap... but owns the works for a good reason. Reason I say this is that we always vote for the minimalist here, but I've personally run into a number of pack rats who have been very helpful to me. And I always like to run into people who have a few bike parts lying around

It couldn't last. He's getting more stuff.

When I was young I wore my clothes out frequently. The bike certainly added to the cost of clothes. So 1 pair of pants didn't work for me. Also to save on washing costs I liked to have a pair of underwear and socks for each day of the week. Being poor and wearing out the clothes it wasn't always possible. Usually only had 1 pair of good shoes but would save the old pair until the next shoe purchase.

Minimalist is OK. But I prefer being prepared for the little problems that pop up. Just my 2 cents.

He has one more cowboy hat than I do. Although I do admire his sense of purpose in keeping his duds to a reasonable level.

I wonder about the "no social media" part. Everything else is connected to reduced consumption and materialism.... but social media? It's a way to keep in touch with people across the world. For me, it's a major part of running my own business - clients find me through social networking sites.

I dunno. The whole thing seems like a good idea taken to extremes. As they say, everything in moderation. I personally find my sane limit is having enough clothes to go 1 week without laundry, not owning a car, eating out only on special occasions, and not using the internet at home or on weekends. Any more than that and I end up with too much, any less and I don't enjoy my free time as much.

I wash clothing and my bed sheets once per week. Having enough clothing too last a week is a money saving proposition. I would waste much more water over the year if I had to wash clothing twice per week. Filling the washing machine is just more efficient.

Socks and underwear come in packages of ten and seven if you're buying the inexpensive ones.

My big purge of stuff has begun. I've got over one-hundred boxes of items in my apartment. I don't know how long it will take to sell all of that stuff. I'm hoping it will take less than a year. Today I'll move the last piece of furniture I want to sell into my living room to prepare it for sale. I'm using stacks of boxes for counter tops for now.

Even when I'm done with the purge I'll have more than most minimalists but much less than my friends. I have no idea where this change will lead me but it is exciting to be making the change.

While preparing to move, I donated or threw out two large trash barrels full of stuff plus two boxes of books. This was all accumulated in only three years--and I was very consciously trying NOT to accumualte stuff during that entire time. We live in times when people attract materrial junk like planets attract meteors.

Too true. Books were a major weight and space occupier for me when I was moving frequently... my ebook reader has been the best purchase ever!

Wait... I just advocated buying even more stuff. Sigh.

It's just about impossible to get away from it. I've had some success by going one or two weeks where I vow to buy nothing whatsoever.

I love books. It's not enough to have a library within walking distance (2 miles away); I like having my own library in one of the bedrooms of our little 3 bedroom house. I like my e-reader for when I bicycle/bus commute, as it's lighter than books and I can read it in the dark on the bus.

I can resist purchasing "stuff" to a point, but people give me stuff... I just got home from a week on the road and there are 2 bicycles in the bike barn that someone dropped off...

I'd have to agree with you... It's more like the Dark Matter that holds the universe together.

I've been > 10 years in my current house and have spent the last year trying to pare some of it down. I think I'm down to a reasonable chunk, but now I have to deal with stuff (like old photos...) that have some sentimental value. That stuff is harder to clear out.
