Got out of work early. Once I got home, I stripped the bike down:
- removed: iBike wireless sensors, bottle cages, chain keeper, chain, front and rear derailleurs, crank, rear wheel - cleaned: crank, frame (somewhat), both derailleurs, pulled cassette off of rear wheel and cleaned - inspected frame for cracks around the BB--nothing found - WD40: derailleurs and cassette - reinstalled: derailleurs and placed the cassette back on the wheel, reinstalled wheel and crank - installed new FD cable (was able to re-use the RD cable); lubed the housings - installed new chain - adjusted out shifting problems I think I've just about killed my HED rear wheel. The hub is ok, but I've had to true it a couple times finding out in the process that there are two defects--one in the aluminum hoop and another with a rounded-off hex nut for one of the spokes. The nut was rounded off before I tried to touch it. The defect in the hoop looks like a rectangle of aluminum is missing next to a spoke hole--very odd. The missing metal sounds like it bouncing around in the carbon fairing. I really need to get my carbon wheels back in service, but I killed the hub in the rear wheel months ago. :notamused: Anyway, the bike is back together. The rear wheel is as true as it can be, but has a little "hop" in it, because the spoke next to the missing piece of metal can't be tensioned--surrounding spokes are taking on the load. I actually did the truing last night and rode the bike to and from work--no problem except for the little hop. So, I guess I'm ready for tomorrow's 134 mile ride. You know it going to rain since I did all of this servicing. |

Well, I'm not getting any interest from anyone else on this ride, so I guess I'm on my own.
I'll ride to the P&R by 7am, just in case, but I'll be leaving shortly after that. also I got a magicshine light due in next week, my P7 needs soldering, my old 200 needs batteries, right now I'm running on old aaa led flashlights. NR, now that you gave your bike the once over, what time should I bring mine by?:roflmao2: |
Hold on...rain and 134 miles?......I'm still a maybe, don't know about all 134 but probally most of it.
Too much soda and pizza=not as fast as last year also if I can get out for some AAA's a 6am might be good. |

26 mile - counter-clockwise as mapped; LOL! You make these folks climb 3 times, the last one the highest of the three; 45 mile - counterclockwise as mapped; street views are neat in Google Map, but no elevation profile to see the climbing; I don't know enough about the west side roads to comment; Inner Harbor roads could be challenging to some who may bite off more than they can chew; -IMHO- So maybe I should ditch these and maybe think about coming down from the county. GB any ideas or thoughts? |
NR, I'm a go got the green light from the boss.
Tell me what time and I'll be there. I found more batteries. |

Tell me what time and I'll be there. I found more batteries. Check your PM. You do realize that this is 215k (134 miles), right? --- EDIT - I see you do know. YOU CAN'T just do a little. It's like Utz potato chips--just can't eat just one. The best part is at the halfway point--the park. |
NR,
You've really broken through to the other side this year. Congrats on hitting 12K So what's it gonna be for the rest of the year? Doritos, beer and Nintendo? Or, stay at your current pace for a 15,500 mile year. |
Even though the light is fading, I'd still be up for a 300k this year.
Possibles: http://dcrand.org/blog/2009/05/12/cu...p-300k-brevet/ or... MX3! http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/357535 |

Josh... where are you?
Are you going to let me tell everyone about our ride or will you do the "honors"? |

I vote for MX3--or we could just ride to OCMD and make a weekend of it. There's no br3ve7s in this boys future any time soon.
I like the OCMD idea. Or perhaps a partial eastern shore loop. |

Go easy, NR. ;) The DC Rand link was referencing the route only. I promise I would not be checking your card during the ride.

Here's a summary of the ride Josh and I did today:
- I leave my house at 6:15am - Met Josh at the Park & Ride - We ride up Eastern Blvd toward Rt 43 - We stop at a Royal Farm store--I need more water. - We ride to: Rt 43, Rt 40, Rt 152, Rt 1, Rt 1 Bypass, Rt 24 - Josh is starting to show signs of fatigue--says something about cramping - We continue north on Rt 24--lots of climbing and a consistent headwind. - We stop--I use VZNavigator to check for a detour, because there's no way Josh will make it for the 134 mile route. I decide to go up to Rt 851 east then Rt 624 south. Rt 624 takes us back to Rt 24, but there's a bit of climbing on it. - We make it back to North Bel Air (Frogtown) and stop at the McDonalds on Red Pump Rd. - It's 10am--we have breakfast. Josh calls home for a ride, but only reaches his father-in-law, who is more than willing to come and get him. - We eat and shoot the breeze. Father-in-law shows up by about noon. - I ride back to Essex--Rt 24, Rt 1 Bypass, Rt 1, Rt 152, Rt 40, Martin Blvd, Kelso Drive... - My rear wheel is going out of true. I continue, but it's getting worse. I stop by Eastern Technical High School to check what's going on. A spoke has broken. There's no way to keep the tire from scraping against the frame. - I ride down Mace Avenue--BaNG!!!!!!! Rear tire pops. - I replace the inner tube, but didn't notice until I was nearly done that the tire sidewall had a hole in it from rubbing against the chain stay. - I put everything back together and do a 0.5 mile "walk of shame" to my home. - Get home--replace the wheels with a rear Topolino and a front Shimano something-or-another. THE END - http://bimactive.com/ba/journal/post/10783/27247 I really need to take some wheels in for rebuild. |
NR- I would expect some equipment wear as you do tons of miles, and on some brutal roads. maybe you should have some regular old 32 spoke wheels.
i ran the bmore half marath today. hr avg 169 or so, way more than my training avg. running is hard. ride tomorrow. My Madone is back with more free **** from Trek, bb cartridges. I would say your short ride option was fortuitous as you may have had the blowout way out there. |
Yeah, my ride sucked bad. I kinda knew I was pushing it attempting those miles, I just didn't know how bad I'd be.
I told NR, that I am in a lot worse shape than last year, very few rides over 50 miles, no intervals or hill repeats, I'm eating like crap and 12-15lbs over this time last year and not riding to work daily. Felt like a *** today. Legs felt like they were starting to cramp around mile 20 or so. After having cramps last ride to Annapolis I didn't want to have to them 60 miles from home. As of today I'll cut back on soda drink milk or water instead, start taking water to work. No more fast food and if I have to I'll let the air out of my car tires to get motivated to ride everyday so be it. Today was my last longish ride til I get in better shape. Nr, thanks for the ride, sorry I couldn't make it. |
Ha, BF blocks out me using P O S (without spaces of course)

same frame? What'd they do? -GB NR-That time blows mine away but I admit to being very slow. My cardio system is def not there yet. |

They said Trek doesn't think the frame is toast. They put in new BB cartridges. I told them I was skeptical and that I would be back first sign of problems. I may just sell the bike as I'm having my old Cannondale powder coated.
