How in the heck do you steer this thing?

There is linkage from Mom's handlebars to the front wheel (seen just under the top tube.)

Yeah, I saw that. It must use a pinion and worm gear.

Sorry, but I can't tell if that's "mom" or dad.

I wish I could go 6 months without falling on my a$$! @#$%!!!!

There's nothing like losing the chain in dead sprint while standing on the pedals. :bike2:

you broke another chain!! damn dude, ease up a little. It's OK to coast. It's my favorite thing to do on a bike

And that's a dad, not a mom. I'm glad the girl up front isn't steering, she cute but clueless.

Grand Prix, I am not familiar with them. Might be tad narrow for my tourer. I hear they don't handle RR tracks very well:)

65/tire...sell them on bikelist.org, they'll pay more because they are now vintage;-)

Both wheel and handlebars have a 90 deg offset that is connected by a steel rod connected to the offset by a pin. Move the handlebar a few degrees which moves the offset forward or back, which directly goes to the wheel offset which moves the wheel the same amount of degrees. Farly simple really. I hope this makes sense. And you got me on the Mom or Dad bit.

I've been up in the Director's office. Once. Back in my AF days.

Oh, funny boy! Don't quit the day job! (j/k!) Yeah, I'm gonna design a track-resistant tire -- I'll make MEEEEEEELYUNS! :D Yeah, I wish they made a 32, I would give those a try on the Trek. When the stock Bontrager tires die, I might try the Schwalbe Marathons on that bike, I hear good things about them.

I think Conti has (or used to have, anyway) a tire that was called *just* "Grand Prix," with the "Grand Prix 4 Seasons" being a different tire.

The 4 Seasons are supposedly the best compromise of weight, puncture resistance, and foul weather handling. (On another forum I used to frequent more often, they were reportedly quite popular with the Seattle-area rando crowd, who do a ton of wet-weather riding.)

I have read complaints that they ride like cement, but I dunno . . . I don't think I've ever ridden on a really nice, cushy, fluffy (is this what NR and GB mean by "supple?") tire. It sounds like I should steer clear, though -- I might get addicted to the nice ride, and then have to become a puncture repair expert like GB! ;) I think the ti frame, and, probably more so, my habit of never pumping my tires any higher than 100 psi might help mitigate the "cement" effect.

I've made the trip 3 or 4 times . . . thankfully, I was never the one in charge of having to lead the discussion.

I was making a left had turn on to Golden Ring Rd from Orems Rd where there's a train overpass that has two skinny lanes. There were cars wanting to go the same way behind me, so I was accelerating and shifting. Apparently, one of the shifts didn't complete and the chain fell off the small chainring and on to the bottom bracket while I was standing on the pedals -trying- to be accommodating to other road users (i.e., get through the overpass quickly.)

Standing + chain drop = crash

So, I have road rash all up my left side all of the way to just under my shoulder blade, left shin got a couple punctures, left forearm just above the elbow is messy, and my left hip has some strange looking road rash that is in parallel lines. The hip is still sore--a deep muscle soreness, but nothing around the joint thankfully.

The bike endured only a couple scratches on the left shifter and I had to push it over to straighten it out. It fared much better than me.

The ride in this morning felt good. Walking is worse, so I'll have to ride my bike inside at work today, I guess.

I had it on at the time. It's at home in the dryer, today.

greaterbrown 05-27-10 11:34 AM

Damn dude. I'm sorry to hear that. Glad you didn't get mashed up by nearby traffic. Scary stuff.
Also happy to hear that the bike is okay. They don't "heal up".

Finally met Mark Tabb this AM on Renee Faison's BBC ride. We were recalling the very scrappy email exchange we got into last year. Not pretty.
Water under the bridge at this point though.

Temps were in the mid 90's. I rode 3/4 of the ride then peeled off at hanover Pike down to Reisterstown and started to cramp on some of those rollers.
And that was a short ride. Here comes the summer.

What GB said! That was the first thought I had, too . . . so glad you didn't fall the "wrong" way!

It is beastly hot and humid right now. I drove in today because I still need to pick up a new helmet mirror, and I want to go right from the shop to do some hiking at Patapsco on the way home. At least it will be (mostly) shady, but I'm thinking a bit of bike-generated breeze might have been a better idea for this afternoon. :twitchy:

NoRacer 05-28-10 05:13 AM

^^^^^^

Thanks, all, for the concern.

The wounds have stopped seeping, the hip is still sore, though, but pain subsided a little. Some good red or a meaty beer from Ireland helps, as well as a good soak in a cold tub of water, especially after an oppressively hot ride home.

I hope everyone wore their lightning proof kit today.

greaterbrown 05-28-10 08:00 AM

I can't measure up to the intensity of Isaias' posts (seeping wounds and curative Irish beer!), but yesterday was a good ride day for me.

After heating myself up riding to/from and with the BBC morning ride (53.5 miles total), I took a quick 29 mile loop around Lake Liberty after work which was beautiful and I managed to dodge the oncoming storm. I was staying late up at the shop because I play music there with a buddy on Thursday nights. After some good playing and Belgian beer drinking, I decided to ride the full route home at 10:45PM. Got halfway there and the skies opened up on me. Ironically, I was now shivering because the temps had dropped and I was soaked. I made it back by midnight giving me another 17.5 miles and making it an even 100 miles for the day.

Pretty cool, eh?

NoRacer 05-28-10 11:08 AM

I'm in one of those moods. I just want to point the bike somewhere--no planning--just go--for 3 days.

Thank you for the heads up. We've had this happen randomly and are
attempting to track it down and crack it. The prices should be fixed
in the next couple of minutes. We apologize for any inconvenience this
may have caused.

The least they could offer is a 15% off coupon.

You guys are mileage hounds. I think on every ride I've ever been on I count the miles to the finish.

Did the ride yesterday called Train to Chesapeake Beach, an organized club ride between Oxon Hill and Pat Pdlrs, I think. I went down there with a friend of mine. Never saw so many riders on an unsupported ride, just a club ride, at least 100. They had a staggered start of sorts with A riders then B etc. I rolled with B then caught up with A then thought better of that. A good ride, moderate terrain, metric century. Lots of seriously doofy bike geeks though. Not like geeky about bikes just adult men acting very dorky.

Today I headed out for Prettyboy from the P&R with a few riders, the route was to go up and around but the guy I was with and I got off cue, ended up a little further north and west so we just headed west and cut out some of the hills. Not a good recovery ride and the guy I was with was on his first ride of the season.

greaterbrown 05-30-10 09:19 PM

I'm probably riding up to O' ridge to ride Dan Artley's ride tomorrow. Last minute mileage for May. :)

I would've been happy to ride out and do that one except that I had a mini-meltdown yesterday:
