My interest in bike commuting and MTB'ing this year has inspired my dad to hop on his bike more and try to lose some weight, so the old man and I spent the weekend riding a rail trail and later hit some dirt trails. One of the trails I rode had a tree down over it. It was too heavy to move and I didn't have a saw with me, so unfortunately we couldn't do anything about it.

After checking out this thread for the past couple weeks, I've been inspired and itching to get a little adventurous (by my own standards) and try a couple of new lines in the crater at my local trail. Since I was a loser and didn't invite any friends, I setup my camera sitting on the ground and hanging from a tree. Still got some decent shots, though. The photo makes it looks much more exciting than the video does. The crater walls feel so much steeper than they look in the video.

Fatty on a skinny. They sorta' self steer. The big fat tire wants to follow every undulation of the trail - you have to work against that. OTOH, when up to speed, they roll over stuff like mad.

The big wheels seem to act like drag chutes when in the air. Gapping over small trail stuff takes more "oomph" than the regular bikes, but isn't too horrible.

nice, I haven't seen many trail riding pictures from fat riders.

First ride on it, so was stopping to tweak setup and pressure a bunch anyhow. After the first 15 minutes or so, felt comfy enough to start doing stupid stuff. Fun bike. Not going to replace the other bikes by any stretch, but makes a nice addition. Will probably see lots of my solo ride time, when not in a hauling ass/hucking stuff mood. Particularly in the winter.

The traction makes for amazing low speed rock crawling on things you'd think you couldn't. You can trackstand for days in the midst of some chunky gnar while figuring out your next move. Also, surprisingly not as slow as one would think. A bit more work to get up to speed, but motors along nicely. Fast directional changes are tougher, and it's a slow climber - 1500gm. tires and all that. But, the climbing traction is amazing.

Got some lighter tubes for it on the way, and plan to drill the rims once they are here. Other Fatty riders suggest that's good for roughly 2# rotational weight loss right there. It's 34# as shown - my heaviest and least suspended bike.

We've been spending the week at Panorama Resort outside Invermere, BC. During the summer months, the bike park is open; in fact, I got to ride here last year during closing weekend (most of the BC bike parks [except Whistler] close the September Long Weekend). Had a blast then. So we're back but on the shoulder season (when my wife and I do some of our best vacationing - - EXCEPT - - things are pretty dead in ski villages in shoulder season.

Soooo . . . left the downhill bike at home, loaded the SB66 and decided to see how much non-lift-assisted trail riding I could find. Trail map showed two XC routes - - one that's pretty much fireroad and another that got used a couple years ago for a Canadian National XC race. Well, I've yet to find all of it...two days out riding around, perusing a sketchy map, one day hiking the mountain and out again today in search of this elusive Mad Trapper XC trail. Dang! I've been on chunks of it now and it's VERY, shall we say, "rustic." And I know now why there are directional arrows on the map: this is no two-way trail. Spent the afternoon today riding/pushing/hike-a-biking up what I think was supposed to be ridden down. Then I lost the signs and ribbons about halfway up the ski slope again. Next attempt another day will be trying to find the other, western end - - only I scoped part of it and it turns out to start UP the tail end of a double-black called Punisher. Oh I remember that one. All I can say is these Canadian XC racers must be freakin' animals. Parts I've found so far have billy-goat ascents and one gully dive that would freak your typical XC dude.

But I'm having a ball, sweating my ass off in <40F temps through patches of a 2" dusting of snow. and exploring the mountain. Consolation is I've found and rode two of the bike park blue trails and a short double-black (with too much snowy wood); and have found the SB is just perfect for these types of trails. It really is a DHer's perfect trail bike by any measure.

Nobody has hassled me riding bike park trails off-season - - guess they figure anyone crazy enough to ride to the top of the lift has earned the priveledge of going back down. Hopefully I'll get out one more time before we have to pack up and head home Sunday. If I can't find the other half of the loop, there's alway Bender or Punisher to give the SB a workout on, haha.

10°f, 80% humidity & a dusting of snow last night.
'Twas a bit chilly, but allgood. 1st snow ride of the year in the books!

Blackrock is somewhere is still HAVE to get to. It's pretty much rideable all year, right? Winter jaunt may be in order.

Put in 2 hours today and I didn't fall down. I was quite excited, even rode around the parking lot with my arms in the air celebrating.

Had to walk up a few hills though due to poor gear shifting. I will also blame the fact that ate too much yesterday and my legs failed at carrying my giant belly up the hills.

Just had some snow and it melted. Made for serious mud slinging fun!
