Did a Thanksgiving ride over Pine Mountain in Marin this morning. Pancakes and Irish coffee at the top. Then, the descent down Repack :)
Great ride. |
Turkey Day roll up to Stockton Flats Rd. area and a look at the XC course around the Notch and Reservoir. Warm, sunny and very few people out on the trails today. Got about 14 miles and 5000' gain.
Second climb past the reservoir http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/k...dy26Nov001.jpg Midway up same and looking back http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/k...dy26Nov002.jpg Top of second climb. Hiked the last 200 meters...very steep and altitude is about 8200' now. Gnarly, steep, complete scree slope all the way down...I hike half way down...no skills, no armour and no wish for something stupid today. http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/k...dy26Nov003.jpg http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/k...dy26Nov004.jpg Back on the bike around here...the grade is doable and the trail widens a bit. A pretty tough looking course to this noob. It's all above 8000', steep, and scree top to bottom. http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/k...dy26Nov005.jpg Ice House Canyon....mellow http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/k...dy26Nov012.jpg http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/k...dy26Nov009.jpg |

Saw a tee-shirt at Lift office that sez: "H.A.C.C.K." (High Altitude Challenge Coates Kona) that got me interested in this course. The event was 9/19/09...can't find anymore info on this. Will contact Coates again.
They have a map on the wall of Olaf's Hut that Sian the mgr. let me copy. Has the layout for the 'Mountain Bike Park' up top. I'm trying to trace the sketchy detail of that map with what I can see around me up there. There are other trails in the same loop area so my apologies to any of you guys who have done/regularly hammer this course - I'm just throwing this up on the forum for some buddies to see. We're climbers and I'm trying to get them off the road and on the trails up there. This place is beautiful and very intense - great fun. |

I just finished riding those trails about 1hr ago. I'm spoiled to have such a great set of trails about 10mins from the house. I'll be back there tomorrow morning and again Sunday morning. :-) |
Rode about 5 hours today, no idea on the milage but it was fun. Great day to ride, 65 and sunny for most of the day.

And now for something completely different - for me. I usually hang out in the C&V forum because I'd a road rider and like the vintage stuff. But now I've expanded my horizons a bit.
I went to the SF Veloswap last Saturday to sell off some stuff, and spent all I made and more on a new toy. Today, I took it for a spin in and around the foothills near home. I'd done some hiking around here, and always thought it would be fun to bang around on a mtb to really cover some territory and see the land. Buying a mtb was the farthest thing from my mind last Saturday, but an opportunity presented itself and I was in a position to take advantage - so I did. I took it out today in its' inagural spin.... 10.5 miles and abut 2,000' of climbing. The weather was perfect, the scenery was grand, and I had one hell of a good time. This rig is more bike than I will ever need or will ever be able to utilize or appreciate, but I really had a time on it. Happy Birthday to me! http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...ock/bike-1.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...k/coyote-3.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...k/diablo-3.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t.../fallcolor.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t.../roadsplit.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...ock/road-4.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...ock/road-5.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...Rock/trees.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...ock/wall-3.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...0Rock/wall.jpg |
great pictures! welcome to the dirt side!

Great photos. What frame is that?

I took out the newly renovated 'cross bike to the usual trails today. Whole different experience! 2 hours of good riding, muddy, then hit a sharp rock and got a pinch flat with 3 pinches. No tube.
|
Only put in a half day at work with plans to get a ride in but when I walk out of the office its raining so no ride for a while.
|
Awesome ride today. Long ride with lots of air time. Sunny and 70f..........
|
First good ride on the PIKE, new stem, new bars, new pedal spindle, new meats.
LOVE IT! There's just something about a good sturdy coil sprung fork, 20mm TA, and strong aluminum bar that give a bike a "mean" / aggressive feel. The new Kenda's were refreshing too. That dadgum Excavator up front is so stable...just perfect. Obviously it doesn't climb out of the saddle like it did with a 50mm stem and 2 less lbs, but sitting and spinning is great. The 35mm Spank Spike stem makes it steer through the trees like a dream. I've gotten used to how twitchy, wobbly, and unstable the Crapper feels like since the Komodo has been down for a bit. This thing feels like one of those European monorails. Just effortless carving between trees. Ed's happy. (until I get upgrade'itis again:lol:) |
