How do you like the Garmin after the maiden voyage? Ive been looking into one just for fun. Thats a nice bit of elevation change I dont think I would see that kind of change over 80 miles out here around me.

Managed to get 10 miles on the new mountain bike in the Diablo Foothills Regional Park on Christmas Day, and another 33 road-bike miles today tooling around the Diablo Valley on my fairly new Pogliaghi.
No pics from today, but a few from the mtb adventure on Christmas Day. Sure is pretty up there..... http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...as/hills-1.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...tmas/house.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...tmas/trees.jpg |

Sometimes its nice to leave the gnar and go for a scenic ride. I have a few single tracks I hit that have no real roots, jumps, drops, or anything else and has good river and ooooollllddddd railroad views.,
|
Went off-road for the first time in over a year. I gave my new-to-me Pro-Flex 756 its baptism. 27km of nice flowing, flat, hard-packed single-track. Lots of fun even though the FS was a bit of overkill for the trail (last time I rode it, I rode a old rigid bike). Despite going too fast into a couple of corners I managed to keep the rubber side down and avoided hitting any pine trees.
I do need to put the shorter stem on the bike and get a pair of riser bars before doing any serious trails. The wrist angle of the flat bars that are on it just doesn't work for me and the reach is a bit long. |

Chicopee Woods lived up to all the hype and it being a beautiful day with perfect trail conditions made it a day to remember. I rode with Joe and his father-in-law Dave; Dave is a member of the Gainesville Southern Off-Road Biking Association (SORBA). He shared much of the history and it is evident all the work and dedication that goes into developing and maintaining the trails shows a true passion for the sport and community that enjoy its use.

Couldn't stand being cooped up today, so I got out this afternoon for a ride out my back door for my annual winter pilgrimage to the top of Stony Peak. Weather was high, bright overcast and 20° F, so had to layer up some. The climb is a little over 1,600' - - most up old logging roads and such. Turned into a bit of a hike-a-bike in some places due to snow and/or steepness; but the 360° views from the top are worth it. Descent back down was chilly but oh-so-fun. Sorry, no pics; will do that the next time out. Stevemtbr has posted some of the vistas in the past though.
Just not the same without my son along too; but someone had to carry on the tradition. |

Just not the same without my son along too; but someone had to carry on the tradition. Yes, there are a couple of great climbs above Tum Tum. I haven't ridden to any of the summits in over a year. The saddle Mountain community officially fenced off the area and posted big new No Tresspassing signs where I used to access the the routes to the top. So I pretty much gave up. But here is the view from Dunn's Mt. for your viewing pleasure. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...r/IM000483.jpg That's Stony Peak on the left. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...r/IM000488.jpg |
Nice and hard-packed trails. It being 17F out helps quite a bit.

Damn Scrub, good job on riding today. 15 f and 40+MPH winds kept me hunkered down inside all day. I did ride three days in a row before today. Looking like a small warm up next few days so it should be good to go. Looks like it's snow free in Connecticut?

Was a sloppy mess, until it got cold enough overnight to freeze up. A bunch of asshats rutted it up like crazy, riding in the slop over the weekend, though. |
holy balls that's cold.

I'm good into the teens, to ride pretty comfortably for 2-4 hours. The key is hands/head/feet/chest for me. If I keep those warm, the rest isn't too bad. Good down into single digits for about two hours, though I've really gotta' be jonesing to ride, to get off the warm couch when it's that cold. Those temps, and lower are rough - it hurts to breath, so you're going a bit slower, in order to breath a bit easier - meaning you aren't work as much body heat to stay warm. At least, that is my experience. |
I rode yesterday for 2.5 hours in the high 20s low 30s with 20-40 mph winds.
|
13.4 miles this morning and back to work by 8:15. Not a single other bike out there, several runners. First time this year that my feet got cold, so did my nose.
|
Perfect winter riding day. The cold set the snow up hard and tacky and with sun beating down it didn't feel too cold. My favorite section of trail was totally iced over still beats working...

23.89 miles with 2308 elevation gain. Plus I found the drainage out of the dirt to the Starbucks. I have looked for that on 3-4 different rides. Nothing like ducking out for a slice of lemon bread and and coffee after a couple of hours.
Double Plus, on the way home, on pavement, (sorry, I ride pavement to the trail) I spied ROADIES, a pack of three. I timed a light just right, they were sitting there and I blew past them and the race was on. It took them 1.2 miles to pass me, I was totally shot by then. It was a good start to the New Year. |
Our local NEMBA crew did an awesome New Years ride yesterday in Duxbury. Fresh snow, a peek of sunshine, and a great brunch afterwards.
Here's a video I shot with the new HD helmet cam. I was questioning whether or not I should hit the teeter with the snow on it, but figured I'd be fine with studs. I didn't figure it would be frozen to the ground, so there was a "hanging in space waiting for the teeter to totter" moment before I heard that sweet crack and it pitched forward. |
I took my first ride with my new suspension fork today. I haven't ridden a bike with suspension (of my own at least) for over two years. It was freezing cold this morning and my feet felt like popsicles but all in all I really enjoyed it. I can't wait for it to get warm/dry again but at least for now I've got something new to keep my mind off the cold. :)
It also happened to be my first ride of the year so 2010 total miles so far: ~12. |
Yak, great vid, really enjoyed it!

What do you do for your ears? When I went out the other day, i cleverly got my headsweats to pull over at least the top of my ears; but, of course my running headbands wouldn't work because of no room between my eyebrows and the helmet. Are there winter headsweats-type skull caps with flaps that cover the ears? Don't need much - - just enough so cold wind doesn't make me feel like I've had a cold-water lavage.

Sunday Ride was perfect weather, probably around 20 miles. the Garmin only recorded 1:10 minutes of a 2.5 hour ride. Was it my fault, did I accidently touch something? Is this the power glitch people have posted about?
