Alright, so I came through this section, and took the jump.

Figured this should go in here too.
My friend has made a great rack for the back of his ute (or "pickup truck" if you're that way located) for our bikes. It fits 5 bikes and we can still stow all out junk in the tray, and we're able to drop the tailgate to access it all! We thought 5 was enough, because you can only fit 5 in the ute. It's really effective, and we put a heavy duty occy strap around the wheel on the back end to keep it steady and it holds for a 4 hour road trip, as we found this weekend. It's easy to get bikes on and off for shuttling as well, the occy strap just wraps around. There are some mods to come, and this is the second prototype. http://www.swdracing.com/6gun.html Most excellent! SWD and I had things all set to do up a custom frame, then the builder sort of...died. Figured I'd not ever see a frame or the 50% down I'd given. In light of him passing, no big deal since the money wasn't huge, and it stayed with his wife. A couple of Steve's buddies got together to work on/fill his backlog of orders after his untimely death. To me, that speaks pretty highly to the kind of guy he was if his buddies are willing and able to do that. Spoke with them a couple days ago - obviously things are moving slowly, because this isn't their full time gig or anything. Frame should be a month or two only, hopefully. A few tweaks from their stock sizing and geometry to get what I want, and have it beefed up how I'd like, and to be able to use my current rear shocks. Nice, since it'll also lower the leverage ratio on the shock over the stock size. 6" travel burly steel frame squishy bike. Slack angles, fatty clearance, short stays and wheelbase. Stiff simple single pivot love. The parts off the Iron Horse Bullit clone will get swapped onto this frame, then the IH frame will be sold. After I get a few rides in on the new toy to make sure all is in order. Only new parts needed are a post shim, seatclamp, and headset. We spoke about the possibility of doing a 1.5 headtube so I could keep my 1.5-->1.125 King reducer set, but 1.5 is/wold be pretty hard for them to do for a steel frame. A nice SARS sealed unit is on the way to me, in gold of course. And a new Hope seatclamp. Gold as well. :thumb: Paint will be basic black. |

Yep. They initially offered me a stock frame, which I siad, uh no wouldn't work for me, no offense. They'd have no trouble selling a basic stocker, either. Regardless of Steve's death, I was wanting a custom frame. Told them I didn't care about the deposit money coming back, but that if they could do up the custom job, I'd be more than happy to pony up the rest for the job. I wanted to use my current parts, and not need a new shock/thruaxle rear wheel. They said they could make it happen, so the deal is back on! At this point, it'll basically be a near carbon copy of the IH frame in terms of size and geometry. Figure to give it a few rides to compare and keep whichever frame I like the feel of more. Even in steel, it may come in a touch lighter, be just as tough, and still be nice and stiff. The IH is overbuilt for my needs, to say the least. |
I don't miss my full suspension bike at all. Though trek/fisher is offering crash replacement for it, don't know which frame it will be though. If it winds up being something like a remedy frame, I may take it if not, I'll just use the money and order a DMR Exalt frame. Heck, I even found a set of 26x2.2 tires that I like.

It's tempting to stay full hardtail. Throw the 180mm Domain and the DH meats on the steel hardtail, and I'd have about the same angles as the squishy, and still weigh a couple pounds less. Then still have the other hardtail for "light flow" days. Setup that way, there isn't much from the squishy that I couldn't hit on that. That said, there are some trails around here, and places out west where I'd really, really miss the squishy. Plus as I'm getting older, it's nice to have that forgiveness somedays, especially when riding multiple days back to back. Such as the upcoming seven days of riding in Moab. :thumb: Figure since I have it, not much resale value, so may as well keep it, right? |

Detailed my bike today after a long ride. Busted out the detail brushes and everything, cleaned it all up. It deserved it. She was good to me today.
