I took the family (and the new pup) to a Super D race at Kerr Scott Reservoir this past Saturday. Not to race, but to hang out as spectators. The weather was about perfect. I had hoped to snag a couple of fall photos, but most of the colorful leaves had already fallen. My wife had a good time, we wore out the pup and my son came home a little more stoked on riding.

Hello gentelman,

So Ive been communting on an old MTB 13 miles everyday and Ive done it for about a year now and Im just now starting to think that a road bike would make my commute a bit easier. I see alot more road bikes on craigslist in my area than MTB. If the frame on my rock hopper is a 23" then I should look for a 58cm road bike? I intended to test ride before I buy but I dont want to waste my time on bikes that are too far off. I appreciate if anyone can shed some light on this..

born2bahick 11-12-08 10:41 AM

You could probalbly go 60+ on a road bike. Is there a shop close by that you could test ride some?

Kendeathwalker 11-12-08 10:52 AM

yes several, I was just looking to get an idea before I went in. Does the geometry differ that much? Im pretty happy with the geometry on my rock hopper..

born2bahick 11-12-08 12:07 PM

Yeah, they are very different animals. Although the compact road frames today are closer to a mountain bike than the conventional road frames are. I ride a larger road frame than mountain.
PS Out of curiousity if you ride a 23 inch mountain frame, Just how big-a-boy are ya?

Wow, just wow. I my front J5 just came in. I put it on and at first was really pissed. It was loud and had no power. It was honestly like sitting on a truck horn (it didnt help that it was raining either). But then I remembered that I had to break the brakes in. After I did that, wow. So much power. I pulled the lever just like I would have previously. Suddenly I was on my front wheel. Maybe I should have just gotten the 6 inch rotor instead of the 7 incher. The talas is also really nice. So far, I've only ridden with the new fork on grass and off of a couple of drops no bigger than 3 feet, but I'm loving the fork. Hopefully I'll get some pics and ride it off road this weekend. It looks sweet to. . .

I can't seem to get the Fox tuned to my taste so I'm gonna make a bushing kit and try a 5th air I've had lying around.

You should learn how to tune the rebound!

5th air pretty much = manitou swinger air. should be pretty easy to tune to your tastes, hopefully.

It's cold as crap outside so I took the day off. I'm in the process of making a bushing kit. The wifes at work and if she saw the stuff I have on her kitchen table she'd flip out.

I picked up some nylon spacers in different sizes from Lowes yesterday. I'm also going to be able to ues some Bullit pivot parts(remember kids, never throw stuff away). XM radio Classic Rewind, is a must for keeping a steady hand. Pics later today.

cryptid01 11-18-08 08:51 AM

So is the 5th longer or shorter than the stock shock?

Cool, I love DIY projects!

mtnbiker66 11-18-08 09:33 AM

Eye to eye is verrrrrry close in the 7 5/8 range. Stroke is just a little bit longer on the 5th.

mtnbiker66 11-18-08 01:32 PM

Done......

These are bearing retainers I kept when I changed the pivot bearings on the Bullit. A little work to thin them out and they work fine.

Nicely done sir!

Looks good! Of course, you know now that we have the same bikes I can't ride with you anymore because when you beat me I'll have no excuse. Oh well, I can always fake a seizure I guess.
