Mavic Crossride or Forte TerraMax Budget wheelset?

need a set of wheels and am very tight on the dinars at the moment.
any thoughts on the comparo between these
Mavic Crossride - $130
https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=5310
or
Forte TerraMax - $120

really can't go much higher for the time being...

I'm 160 lbs, very intermediate XC rider, no huckin good... just like crawlin thru dirt...

which would you pick? (other deals in this price range considered...)
thanks

You realize the Crossride set is for Center-Lock discs, right?

Another alternative at about the same price - - Deore disc hubs/RhynoLite rims. Not the lightest I'm sure but cheap and would last quite a while under you:

I have a TerraMax rear wheel. It seems to be quite durable for the money. In the 4 or so months I've had mine, they've done everything I've thrown at them just fine. Handled quite a few 3.5 foot drops to flat with no issues. And they are still fairly true despite my hackish riding. Plus they come with a performance warranty which I was told is no questions asked.

yeah, part of the money issue is I have to spring for new brakes also... but leanin very heavy to std disks like the BB7 and some other wheelset - like maybe the WTB speedDisc/Shimano set...
I looked at the Deore/Rhynolites while at the local performance, and they do seem a bit much for what I might need... ergo the TerraMax, which are supposed to be 400+ grams lighter (1 lb.).
I'm not particularly hard on mtb wheels... would prefer to err on the side of 'lighter' if the general feedback on a wheelset is OK. And then, maybe by summer, I might be able to spring for something better.

I can say that I got the TerraMax after destroying my rear SpeedDisc. The TerraMaxes I think are lighter (I dont really care much about weight), and I know they are more durable.

thanks for your comments - I was leanin to the terramax. I've had good experiences with their road wheels, have a set of titans which have done 7K mi last year and I've never had to touch them. Bearings are still solid, spokes tight and rims seem bulletproof. If the Terramax are close to as good a value, I'll be really stoked.
also think I wanna try to do the ghetto tubeless thang with them - we'll see how that goes...

I have the SpeedDiscs. The freehub has a bit of lateral play which the LBS said is perfectly normal and within tolerance, but otherwise they have been holding up well for the few months of medium XC stuff I do. How did yours fail? Was it the crappy Formula hubs, or the rim?

If you get the Terramax that has the centerlock hubs, you just have to get centerlock discs, so the brake caliper will not change.

I think the Terramax is a better bet for you. I had the cross rides and the front would flex a bit under the pressure of cornering. And he is right about the warranty for the P-mart.

I just finished my new hardtail build (see my thread) and went with the WTB FX28's with Deore hubs for $100. The wheels are finished very well and excellent build quality is evident. I have WTB's on my IHorse Expert HT and after banging some rough trails in N. Cal. for 2 years, still straight and true..even though I weigh 210lbs.
Here is the link for the set on eBay..I have purchased quite a bit of stuff from the seller...all good. https://cgi.ebay.com/WTB-FX-28-DEORE-...3%3A1|294%3A50

That said, the Forte's look great and you also get the points for extra swag.

You can get the CrossRides with a 2yr crash repl. warranty for a small % more. I taco'd by front CrossRide when it was 9 days old and I got a completely new wheel from the Mavic MP3 warranty. You don't even need to go through Performance for the warranty. Any Mavic dealer can do it b/c the serial # is on the wheelset.

Yeah, but the TerraMaxes come with the warranty, and if you live near a performance, they should get it fixed within a few days.

My SpeedDiscs were laced to some what I have to admit were nice (to me) Shimano hubs. They did fine. However, I broke a spoke (and was told that the wheel didnt really need to be rebuilt) off of a 1-2 foot drop to near flat. It was in fact a very smooth landing (for me). Then I broke another spoke or two trying a tail whip like thing off of a loading dock (not a tail whip, but one of those things where you slide the tail out midair). The wheel then needed to be rebuilt, and for the 60$ It was going to cost, I figured it would be better just to get another wheel. The Second set of broken spokes were my fault, but I've taken rougher landings with the TerraMaxs and they are still true. My SpeedDiscs were always out of true, and i was tightening spokes after most rides (And this was before I broke the spokes the first time)
