Season's derailed before it even started

Today was the first official practice day for a 2-day / 2-race even at Spokane's Beacon Hill. Things were progressing well for me through the day. I was practicing the Saturday course and found a fellow Blindside rider (30+ guy) to partner up with a follow through some of the sections that were giving me fits. Last run before moving over to try a run or two on the Sunday course. Finally, after a year of it stymying me, I nailed the double near the top and also cleared a new double after a berm-to-berm. I was soooo jacked. A bit too jacked I guess: I hit a jump I've done like a bazillion times, only things were going so well, the little voice inside me said I didn't need to brake-check it this time. Mistake. Over-rotated and overcompensated the hip, so I nosed down in the bottom off-kilter and piled it in the bottom.

Limped down the hill, packed up, drove in to urgent care and - - sure 'nuff - - x-ray says I cracked my collarbone. This weekend's gone; our own Beacon race next month is gone and I'll feel fortunate if I can get back on in time for the Fluidride national at Port Angeles, WA in May. Crap

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

Ouch! Been in your position, with a cracked collarbone. Enjoy the pain meds and take it easy and heal up.

Sorry to hear Doug.

I tried to ride the dmr today and it bothers my ankle too much to even ride it with the platforms on. Going to try it again in a week or so, but I have a feeling I'll be off the mtb for awhile.

Thanks, Tom. This one's not as bad as my last one - - that one broke clean through in two places and I had three cracked ribs and a punctured lung to boot. Chest tubes suck! I'm considering myself relatively fortunate this time. Especially since it's on the opposite side from my wife's cuddle-up shoulder this time .

edit - Sorry to hear - - hope it feels better for you next wek, Dan.

Booo-urns D, that sucks! At least it's early in the year so you can heal up and still enjoy most of the season. If you want to head up here and help scope some trails while you recover, you're more than welcome!

I think it would damn-near kill me to scope trails I couldn't ride up there in God's other country. But, then again, my wife would probably appreciate a vacation up that way without me champin' at the bit to go riding all the time without her.

I'm taking a little consoltion in the fact that I boosted those two doubles. I doubt that either one was over about 15-16' but it's always a red-letter day when I man up and finally hit one of those.

Tough break, dminor. Hope you have a speedy recovery. Did they put you in one of those figure 8 slings? I had to wear one of those for a while for my left collar bone? Maybe technology has come a long ways since I broke mine but I remember they sucked to wear. So with you being sidelined, what happens with your sponsors? Do you still go to all the race events? Just curious.

Yeah, they put a figure-8 on me. Really, it's not bad - - help hold me shoulders back and reinds me not to flex it forward. Sleeping is a pain but oh well. Funny, my last collarbone break was clean through in two places and they didn't truss it up . . . thing just clicked around until it finally healed.

Sponsors are pretty understanding about stuff like that. And I don't intend on being out the whole season. Goal is to be completely whole and back in race form before Silver Mtn opens - - so I can be more than ready for Crankworx.

I'm going tomorrow to cheer on a couple of the young guys from the shop; and I guess I'll get to be pit crew for my son when he comes over for our Beacon race next month.

Thanks for the good thoughts all. I'm drinking my milk and my calcium OJ and I'll at least get on the trainer in the basement next week to keep the legs fresh.

It's more of the Cross-Your-Heart variety Those cups are a bit big for my bony shoulderblades, though.

That's for sure. He's always been my best riding / practice partner.
